This is apparently old news, but I just heard it today from the Kaplan Review Centre in my area and I haven't found any topics mentioning this.
So, apparently the GRE is being completely revamped in 2011? The verbal section is switching focus from vocabulary to "reasoning", ergo the analogy and antonym sections will be taken out. I was also told that the quantitative section will be made "much harder" as roughly 5 percent of people who take the test are scoring 800. The fact that an online calculator is provided seems to reinforce this. The exam will also no longer be scored on a scale of 200-800 but rather on a scale of 130-170.
I'm slightly freaking out, I was going to prep over the year and take the exam in the summer of 2011, but as it stands I might have to rush to take the exam at the end of this summer now. I really don't want to be the guinea pig for the new format.
I took the old GRE in Nov 2009, and they were already introducing optional sections we could complete at the end of the test to see how people were doing on them. They were very different then the rest of the standard format. They encouraged you to complete them, and if you scored in a high percentile, you would get some money.
I hope they change it - the verbal section was mostly just knowing the definition of obscure academic words - not really a good measure of verbal reasoning ability.

Changing the GRE format?

Good luck!
