I'm faced with choosing USC or SAIC (School of the Art Institute of Chicago). I'm most interested in Historic Preservation through the avenue of Architecture. I'm afraid of missing out on Chicago as an Architectural Mecca vs Los Angeles' definite need to keep its buildings that people keep tearing down.
USC:
Accredited
Well known University
Definitely a 2 year program
LA may be lacking in Historic Preservation compared to Chicago
VERY EXPENSIVE
SAIC:
Unaccredited (at the moment, may be accredited in 2011)
Well know Art School, very new Architecture program
Not confirmed if it will be 2 or 3 year program for me
No one can deny how great Chicago is for Historic Preservation
I have been given a very large scholarship to go here
I'm leaning to USC only due to it's reliability of being a professional secure school at the moment...but I might have my "professional" heart in Chicago....
Preservation at SAIC is a decades-old department, separate from architecture. The faculty in preservation played a founding role in the preservation movement in the US, and the work their students turn out is quite good. The student body is both young and diverse.
The Preservation program is accredited by North Central, it is only the architecture program that has pending accreditation from NAAB. I encourage you to investigate the times and terms under which NAAB has denied a program accreditation.
