Scholarships

As the academic year draws to a close and I find myself just two weeks away from both a high school diploma and A.S. in graphic design, there's little more I can do to prepare for the next five years of school. All I have left to submit is my health forms ad acceptance of Cooper's already generous financial aid package. Getting a $3k grant and having no tuition is wonderful, to say the least. Yet still, with an estimated budget of $20k to live in the first year I can't help but think of ways to keep my head above water for the first few months until I can find a paying job (or internship) with some growth potential. So I ask of you, dear Archinects, what scholarships or other funding is available to any of us about to start architecture school in the fall? I have applied to a few here and there but none specifically related to architecture. Is there even such a thing before graduate school fellowships and such? I'm curious to see what others have seen or heard of that might not catch the eye in typical venues (FastWeb, Zinch, et al).

Dear ismith,

I don't know anything about scholarships, but my advice to you is avoid credit cards at all costs. All the card companies love to give them out to first year college students because they know financial aid never completely covers the cost of living. You rack up debt thinking that you can pay it back when you graduate and are making money, but the market might not make that a reality. You're then stuck paying the minimum payments for-ever-and-ever and you end up paying impossibly more than you borrowed.

Good luck, and congratulations on getting into Cooper.

Noted & much thanks! I've had a credit card for a while and have been very good with it so far but I'm looking to get rid of it since I'd much rather just deal with cash, savings, and checking/debit than having a credit card bill on top of all of that. And certainly with whatever liberal spending I could be tempted towards while trying to make certain ends meet...

I'm bumping this because I just got the letter from yet another scholarship I didn't get... unfortunately I'm ineligible for many grants and scholarships because I will already possess a college degree by the 15th of this month. The majority of applications I've been given are also limited to people who would be transferring to other schools in the state of Connecticut.

I heard that there were grants given by the New York Society of Renderers and the American Society of Architectural Illustrators but I have yet to find any information on either and am doubtful they are appropriate for a first year undergrad.

I've seen plenty of scholarships for art or engineering students that I am otherwise eligible for, but I'm (happily) locked in to architecture and still surprised I haven't found anything similar for architecture students.
