uToronto (undergrad help)

Johnsenl

And yes, I have searched this forum extensively! :)

I'm a junior in high school in the states and I've been looking into schools for architecture. It's a very complicated process, as I'm sure many of you can attest to!

I visited the university of Toronto last summer and absolutely fell in love with the school. Problem solved, right?

Then I got to the architecture building. To be frank, it was in bad shape and pretty filthy. When I asked where the studio space for undergraduates was, they looked at me like I was insane and told me there was none. However, they have recently announced that they are renovating their building and perhaps this would change.

So when should the renovations be done by? (I'm entering fall 2011 and I'd rather not have to deal with all the construction noise...)

Are undergraduates really so neglected?/ If I get my undergrad there, does that help me get into the masters program there?

Or can someone describe what it's like going to uToronto?

Well, they do not have an architecture program for the undergrad - it's really Architectural Studies under the Humanities and Social Science stream...so you can major with another subject like Politics, or Yiddish, or what have you...

I think they are

And eventually you'll end up with a Bachelor of Arts.

Now, you can go to masters, afterwards by majoring in architectural studies after UofT......however it comes to question if you wanna work right after undergrad...

Their undergrad does not seem to give focus on the technical skill that you would need to work, its more heavily focused on theory and discourse, which won't necessarily land you a job...which i've heard from many people

which is why i chose Ryerson (i'm from Toronto too...) strictly because they look at things technically and theoretically to help you get a job at the end of the day...they're undergoing accreditation though with their unfolding of a new curriculum and masters program.

Umm....let's say Ryerson is great...they're kinda screwing me over right now so i might have negative bias against it...but overall i think has taught me so much (stayed back, new curriculum, totally different)...but like yeah i still have faith in it.

(P.S. I must say anyday i love the architecture and beauty of the UofT campus...hopefully Ryerson can catch up...soon)

Hi,

I'm graduating from UofT's undergrad architecture program this year and I'm also staying here for my MArch.

You're both right about everything so far. Yes, the building will be undergoing a significant renovation, but I don't think that will happen anytime soon as we're currently awaiting more funding. I doubt construction will start even after 2011.

Resources for undergraduates are very limited, although we've recently acquired a room in the visual arts building as a working space. I wouldn't say I felt neglected in my years here, but there is a heavy emphasis on the graduate program as opposed to the undergraduate one (this has to do with the fact that undergraduates are part of the Faculty of Arts and Science, and not the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design).

Also true is the school's focus on theory and discourse. We engage in plenty of discussion regarding the state of architecture as an academic field, so if you find that interesting, you may like the curriculum. Although you may not learn all of the practical techniques here that you'd learn at Ryerson, I think the 5 studio sequence for architecture (design) majors teaches you enough to be comfortable with design/representation skills.

With that in mind, it might be tough to find a job if you just do your BA here. However, almost all of my fellow students are geared towards going to grad school, where you will obviously learn more technical skills. Most undergrad students that apply get accepted to UofT's MArch program (at least from what I've heard), but many also end up going to grad schools in the US.

There was some discussion about this before as well:
