Columbia - NY/Paris: Shape of Two Cities

bernardo

Hey all,

I'm a current sophomore at Brown University and was just accepted to Columbia's Shape of Two Cities Program for next year. I'm excited but also hesitant. I'm a transfer to Brown - I was at GW my freshman year - so I'm a little nervous about the prospect of essentially transferring again for my junior year. Also, I'm a little unsure about just how intense the program is. Will I legit be in the studio 24/7 or will I have some free time as well - especially in Paris? For me, part of studying abroad is the ability to travel; is that even an option or is the work just too intense? Also, is housing provided or do I need to find my own place to live? Columbia's website isn't bad but it's somewhat vague on the details....

Any input/advice - especially from recent students - would be greatly appreciated. I need to decide within the next week and I'm sort of lost as to what I should do... I really like Brown but I also think this program could be a lot of fun... I'm hoping for a bit more info to guide my decision.

Thanks!

Well, I'm not recent -- I was part of the first summer/fall NY/Paris program, in the late 80s.

(I also went to Brown.)

The program's intense, but still undergraduate. You'll be out in Paris a lot -- in our day there was one class devoted to getting to know Paris really well. There was also some time for travel (in our case, we went as a group places as well, like St Malo and Normandy), but there was a lot of time spent in studio.

Housing was not provided.

BTW I did summer/fall precisely because I didn't want to be away from Brown too long. After I got to architecture school I ended up meeting a fair number of NY/Paris alums as well.

Good program ... it was my introduction to New York as well, and many years later I ended up living here and bringing my career here, something I doubt would have happened had I not that introduction before.
