Hi~
I need help to choose where to go~!
Luckily enough, those schools offer me admissions, but this makes me hard to decide.
First, AAD program is well-known for its digital studio and its location (NY City).
Of course, Ivy league, but unreasonably expensive;
However, Umich also has a good reputation and its course is accredited. (Umich offered me an 10,000$ per year). Since I have a 4 year B.S. in architectural eng. degree (international), March program will surely helpful for me to get a job.
I’d like to have a work experience in the states for 3~5 years, and I don’t care about getting a license. Is it really necessary to take an accredited program to have a job in the states?
Lastly, I am still waiting on Upenn (March1 ap, wait list).
If I could get admission I may go to Upenn, even though I have to waste 700$;
Since AAD program starts on June 2, I kind of in a hurry due to the visa problem.
I know it’s kind of silly question, but I’d like to hear some opinions from brilliant archinetors.
Some jobs out there, especially some of the crappy ones in NY, will ask you for an accredited degree. But if you try to work for design-oriented studios they won't care. Ive seen some really great things come out of UMich, and they have a great dean there now. Ive also heard that Columbia is not how it used to be when Bernard Tschumi was there, and theyve kind of become a fast-food grad school. I dont know if there is still a way for you to get licensed in NY without the accredited degree. I think there is, but you need 5 years of experience or something like that.
After living in NY for some time, ive grown a little tired of seeing the same little Columbia grad firms pop up and disappear. Many of those studios are unlicensed. If you go there just dont fall into the trap of being the t-shirt of the week, be the constant cool-hunter.
Be the constant cool-hunter~!
Thanks~ fadetoblacko~!
I will keep that in mind~
What I am thinking right now is just go to Columbia and having a work experience right after the graduation, if possible. I think seeing is more powerful way of learning than trapped in school, and feeling(experiencing) is much more powerful. I think NY City itself could teach me a lot about modern society’s problems & solutions.
But I don’t want to be one of big Mac from Columbia~!
I guess I have to try harder than ever~~~
To be clear the MSAAD is a Master of Science? Correct me if I'm wrong, this is not an accredited degree, and you if you plan on getting licensed you will need an MArch down the road anyway (alternative is 10 years work experience, typically). So I'd say get your MArch now, for me it doesn't make sense to get a Master of Science degree before you have an accredited degree.
i'd like to point out, from the website, i understand gsapp MSAAD program degree requirement is a professional degree (b.arch or m.arch I) or equivalent, no? so entering this program, you already have an accredited professional degree anyway and therefore can get licensed anyway.
i'd like to hear otherwise, because i have an international b.sci arch degree and would like to apply to gsapp msaad program.
thanks!
