moving is difficult. especially for people coming from different parts of the nation/globe/or universe. it would help to get an idea of what we are doing in terms of housing at their respective schools.

You can always check on craigslist to get an approximation of whats available and average prices. Put the address into Google Maps to find out how close it is to the university you're looking at. I would think in general apartments near the university would be somewhat decent. If its a major city (as would be for most universities) you can do a photo walk-through of the neighborhood using Google Maps.

My undergrad university, UW-Milwaukee, had a web page all about student housing, including on and off-campus. Landlords could post available apartments there as well, much like craigslist. Check with your university. http://www.risd.edu/housing_offcampus.cfm

I would try to get ahold of a couple current former students from RISD, see if you can find any info on what area(s) students normally live in. Perhaps call the architecture department's advising office if they have one, perhaps they can put you in contact with a few students.
