I'm UVA bound and starting the daunting task of finding housing in Cville. Can anyone reccomend the best areas for graduate students to live? Do people generally live within walking distance or do they spread out? I know that everyone says a car is neccesary, but I'm really going to try to get by on a bike and zip car. So, I'm assuming I'd either need something close by or near the bus line. That said, I hear that Rugby Road/The Corner is a really lound, undergrad scene. I'm looking for something a little more tame. Any areas within walking distance that people reccomend? Woud living downtown be too far? How long does the bus really take to get from downtown to the arch. school? Thanks!
i recommend finding a place on university circle. so close to the a-school, but also a quieter, slightly more residential street. everything downtown is really nice, but without a car it might be troublesome to work late nights in the studio (even with a car is not so great bc there is no parking). the bus/trolley is about a 20 min ride. you can bike it in 5-10. email me if you want more info from someone who spent 4 years in c'ville.
I would second looking at university circle. Downtown/Belmont are both great neighborhoods, but for the amount of time you'll be spending in studio, I'm not sure the hassle is worth it. (That said, I have friends who do it with a bike everyday and would never move closer.)
i went to UVa for undergrad and will be returning as a grad student this year. my plan for housing is to look on u. circle or in the neighborhood off of ivy road (i forget if it has a specific name). mostly smaller homes with families - but some are sectioned off as rentals. nice quiet neighborhood and within walking distance to the a-school. downtown is pretty awesome too, but with all the time we will be spending in studio it is nice to be as close as possible.
