I was wondering what other school Studio schedules are like.
If so, put your School Name, Degree (B.Arch, M.Arch), and How many days you guys have scheduled design studio (i.e., the studio that YOU have to go to, to meet up with professors, desk crits, lectures, etc). Also, If you guys have laser cutters, and if you have to pay for the use of them, if $o, how much?
School:USC
Degree: B.Arch
Studio Schedule: M - W - F; 2-6 pm.
Laser Cutters: Yes
Rate: 5 dollars for 15 minutes.
School [undergrad]: University of Florida
Degree: B.Design in Arch
Studio Schedule: MWF 1:30-5:30
Laser Cutters: they have them now, but I was there before they were common/existed in arch schools...
Rate: not sure
School: [grad]: Washington University in St. Louis
Degree: M.Arch
Studio Schedule: MWF 1:30-5:30*
*we often go past 5:30, and have additional sessions regularly
Laser Cutters: Yes
Rate: $2.50 for 15 min.
...
I like the laser cutter aspect of this survey. Over the holiday break I conducted an informal survey of my own (via gmail chat with friends at 7-8 other grad schools) and found that most are free, one cost a negligible amount (25 cents per cut file sent to the machine, regardless of how long it takes), and that few charged by the hour, but of the people I asked, the highest rate was $3 an hour...
Laser Cutters: Yes
Rate: $0.70/min (so $10.50 for 15 min I guess)
The laser cutter was only around for my last semester and I didn't have a need to use it, but I got the pricing from the school's website. I probably would have tried it out in the previous 4 studios if it had been around then. They also have a rapid prototyping lab, but once again, I didn't use it in my last semester, but it says it costs $2.00/cubic inch of powder used. Studios are usually 4 hrs a day 3x a week, generally MWF but not always (like my last one).
3 hour studio? Do you think thats enough time? I am not saying its not, but I am just interested. Because SOME of our professors will take the class to 5 hours sometimes, and during reviews, thy may even exceed longer. And it kinda sucks because they always jam into our heads the reality of time constraints, yet they don't know how to manage time during crits.
I was pretty mad about the laser cutters. USC is a very expensive school, we should at least got some worth out of the utilities. If they start charging us for plotters, I really don't know what I will do with my self.
Its very interesting to see that most schools have the same amount of days and hours that each student has to attend for studio.
All were fairly expensive and if you wanted to do anything in the rapid prototyping lab you better get it in early since all the other disciplines in the college had the same deadlines.
LA - Our studios would often go overtime, I would say that 80% of the class was there an hour before the scheduled start time and between 1 and 2 hours afterwords. That said, if you had any class that came up after the 'required' three hours were up, you wouldn't be discriminated against for leaving 'early'. I valued the flexibility, which may have only succeeded because my school had a very informal working environment.
School: University of Florida
Degree: BDes in Architecture
Studio Schedule: MWF 1:55-4:55 (3 days a week for 3 hours a session)
Laser Cutters: I think so now, but they didn't have them when I was there... which was last year.
Plotter: The plot room was a disaster, ~$0.60 per square foot
