I have been following the M.arch folks too. I am breathing the sigh of relief after going through MLA app process. We will see what happens. As far as prep for the oncoming year, I plan to do some reading. A professor had given me a stack of books that I haven't been able to glance at yet.

Hi, I also applied to MLA programs this year. As far as 'next year' (beginning today, the day after I sent my last app):

Read more, make more art, start more projects, plant more native, edible trees/bushes (for my dear ol' ma.... hopefully i will be out of here by the time they are ready), join the artists' coalition, draft my anarcho-feminist business plan, volunteer more, get better at my job, fight for gay/immigrant/refugee rights, come up with a back-up plan in case of no funding (or, dare I say, no acceptances) AND last but not least: get off the computer.

anyone know anything about the Cornell 1 year Msc in Landscape ? It is run through the department of agriculture, not design.
I'm looking for a good Landscape masters program that focus' on urban issues like agriculture.

azcue:
Cornell's LA program is housed in the College of Ag and Life Sciences (CALS), and their research based Masters is an MPS (masters of professional studies).

If you're looking for a research degree then you should look at faculty and not the program, and see if any faculty research/expertise aligns with your research interests. But a one-year degree won't be accredited, and won't help you with licensing (if you don't have a BLA).

I would look at UWashington (Lawson and Hou)

anyone out there in the position of making a hard decision? care to commiserate/ congratulate/share?

been accepted to UT and UVA. their accepted student days are on the same day, which is unfortunate. still waiting to hear from the GSD.

Hey emily, congrats on getting in to UVA and UT - I also got into UVA's MLA program! Maybe we'll see each other there...

I'm also going to have to make a tough decision - UVA vs. RISD, (or UBC?). I'm so grateful to be in a position to make this choice, but it's intimidating to think about its weight. Hearing about financial aid will really help.

What aspects of the UVA program appealed to you?

hi,

i also got into RISD- stil waiting for UPENN and Uoft. wish i applied to UVA and UBC as well.. is anyone seriously considering RISD, if so, why? or why not if not? thnkx and congrats to all who got in.

so, i did also get into RISD, but am not thinking I will accept. i went to an art school in boston for undergrad, and feel that the discussions and general experience would most likely be similar. looking for more of a university. and, it's real pricey.

UT is the top choice right now. it's edging out UVA on terms of location, being an in-state resident, and when i visited....just got a good gut feeling about the place. energy was high. i'm sure the same is true about UVA energy though, I just think i'd rather spend 3 years with those who choose to go to school in austin. that's probably not too helpful....

middle: what are YOU thinking about UVA?
FL: they sent an email

congrats everybody! here's my UVA stream of consciousness pro/con list:

cons: Charlottesville. Virginia. Can I handle living here? I have to buy a car. Bob McDonnell will be my governor. The AG just told Virginia schools that they are not allowed to NOT discriminate based on gender expression, sexual orientation, etc. I will be really far away from everyone and everything. This is the town that produced such brilliant cultural icons as DMB and John Grisham. Terrifying thought: do I have stay here (or in DC) after graduation???

pros: None of that stuff will matter because I will be in studio. I've never been to Virginia so maybe my judgments aren't fair. Student work is amazing. Kristina Hill. Julie Bargmann. Isolation = lack of distraction and expensive things. Program focus is exactly what I'm looking for.

Basically UVA is everything I've always wanted ---- but WHY does it have to be in Charlottesville? (Anyone who's actually been to Charlottesville: feel free to chime in and correct my prejudices)

I also got into RISD and I'm seriously considering it. Without getting too in depth about my reasoning: I went to a large state school in the south for undergraduate Architecture, and I want to be in the intense artistic environment that RISD would provide. I feel like the people, professors, and the overall school, would push me creatively. Also, I really like the northeast and Rhode Island in general. The only downside is the cost. I'll have to do a lot of self reflection to decide whether it's worth it or not.
I plan to attend the open house so I can see if it is really what I am hoping for.
I have 4 other schools I applied to that I haven't heard from yet, so that will affect my decision, and of course, what kind of financial aid I do, or do not get.

So I know most of the schools here are American, but I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on UBC? I got into the MLA program there and want to go because of their environmental focus and the fact that I can choose an urban design study stream (among others). I LOVE the campus, city, province and climate, and I'd be lying if I said that wasn't part of the reason I want to go. But I wonder if U of T's MLA is more geared towards urban design (which it seems like it might be), and if that's a good enough reason for not leaving Toronto. I AM pretty tired of this place.

But...if UBC's the only place i got in, then the decision is made for me anyways.

to middleAmerica:

Charlottesville isn't that bad. Politically, it prides itself on being the blue dot in a red state. I think if you come, you'll find that there is actually way more you'd like to do here than you have time for - it's got a lot of culture for such a small town. (This weekend is actually the VA festival of the book, and in the fall UVa hosts the VA film festival.)

I understand your concerns - I moved from a large northern city and had a considerable adjustment period. But, once you get away from the university and the undergrads, you can find cool people/places. There are great restaurants, and plenty of good bands/speakers come through. As for having to stay here or in DC, I don't think that should be a worry. UVa is well known/respected nationally (and internationally) and the alums are pretty far-flung - I definitely don't plan on settling down in Central VA.

It's not the most exciting place you'll ever live, but it's actually a nice town - and it's great to be so close to Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge.

Burrito, I haven't heard anything from Berkeley, (and Penn)

so far heard from UIUC, RISD, GSD

if you are talking about Prof. Laura Lawson, she's teaching at U of I
I got my BLA there.

good luck !

@parkgirl: Sorry, that post about Charlottesville seems really rude now that I read it over again. I shouldn't criticize a nice town that I know nothing about... just projecting my own frustration at my current place of residence.

Has anyone made their decision yet?

Mar 18, 10 10:42 am  ·

Haemee: I may be visiting Urbana. Any recommendations of things to do or sights to see that would give me a better feel for the city/school?

I've only visited Charlottesville once, but it seemed like a pleasant environment: young, friendly, open-minded people; nice weather; relaxed atmosphere; and bike friendly. Someone on another thread mentioned they would have to buy a car if they moved to Charlottesville--not sure why you would need a car in such a small environment. Everything seemed bike/walk accessible. Actually, now that I think of it, I'm really kicking myself for not applying there (missed the deadline).

I have yet to decide on a school. If I don't get any financial aid and actually manage to land a decent job I recently interviewed for, I may just turn them all down and reapply next year (would that be stupid of me?). That's a big maybe at this point.

Congrats to all, whether you've been accepted or not. I believe it's an accomplishment just to get the portfolio and mission statement completed, at least it was for me.

I decided to attend GSD ! Anyone goin their open house on April 9?

Burrito - Champaign - Urbana is(are) a great city ! very friendly, safe, cheap housing, if you decide to attend U of I, you will be using very cool studio. I guess you should visit studio, and meet David Hays ( MLA Coordinator / Professor ) and talk to him about UIUC's MLA program and about your interest. He's a great guy!!

place to eat - Green St. or there's a mall ,

I loved my school so much, teachers were awesome,, it was very hard for me to decide to leave UIUC. tears *

Thanks for the info, Haemee. And congrats on Harvard. UIUC does seem like a great program. I was especially impressed with the faculty's diverse set of interests. They seem to have all the bases covered.

Still in the dark about Berkeley. Sadly, even though I give myself about a 1/100 chance of being accepted, for some odd reason I still obsess over hearing from them. Just doesn't make sense.

I've seen a lot of talk about UBC's landscape program, not just in this thread, and wanted to know what is so special about it?
Is it held in high regard? Notable faculty? Just curious to see whats all the hubbub bub.

azcue,
You could probably go on to UBC's website yourself and research their faculty. You could probably search a little and find out what some of the Alumni are up to, and from the website also see some of the student work, and maybe catch a glimpse of the studio culture.
I also think a part of the allure of UBC is the location. At least I love Vancouver.
Anyway, from what I can tell through a little investigation it seems like an exciting program.

Folks can log onto Upenn's site and learn if they've been admitted as of noon today. I learned I got wait listed at Penn after having been accepted to the GSD. I don't quite get that seeing that I found (and believe the general consensus to be) the GSD is a better program. UPenn had many more restrictions on their application: size of portfolio, number of images, word limit on the essay.

good thread, y'all. in order to ease the pain of my recent UPenn waitlisting, and hopefully to get some feedback, i thought i'd see what anyone has to say about my choices, as follows:

U of Texas- accepted
LSU- accepted
Georgia- accepted
U of MN- accepted
Penn- waitlist
GSD- no word
Berkeley- no word
NC State- no word

I'm not holding out too much hope for those last four (don't even know what the hell happened to NCState, haven't heard from them in a while) but my fingers are still crossed. Even though I'm from MN and have lots of friends and family there, I think the first three are my better bets. Any thoughts/advice?

I'm joining the fun!

...and the crowd of people who got waitlisted at Penn today.

I applied to:
RISD - accepted
UMass - accepted
Cornell - accepted
Penn - waitlisted
VTech - no word yet

I wish I had applied to:
UVA
Berkley
UBC, and maybe
UGA
but thanks to a combination of late decision-making and ignorance, I didn't. sigh.

I might still attend RISD's Open House, but I'm a very practical person at heart and I'm not sure an art school is the best for for me. E.g. I almost chose to get my degree in law instead of landscape architecture.

Accepted by RISD. Still waiting on GSD, U of T, Guelph.
Curious about your impressions of RISD -- strengths, weaknesses, quality of studio experience, faculty, etc.
