passerby1ce_ they offerred to cover my tuition + $10k stipend for the 2010-2011 academic term. however, my understanding is that 2nd and 3rd year students actually have more of an opportunity to get $ since gsi positions become available as well as other fellowships.
while i don't expect berkeley to pay my tuition and give me a $10k stipend every year, i am hopeful to receive some $ for the 2nd and 3rd years as well. by the way, berkeley's m. arch option 3 program is only 3 years, not 3.5 like many others, though i personally expect to be there for at least 4 years since i would apply for the dual degree for a master's in urban planning next year or something like that. pretty stoked on the offer either way, since i'm just thankful to have even been accepted to some of my top choices.
like ncro mentioned, if folks are really serious about berkeley, i think their summer program would be worth it. while i didn't like my instructor, the program itself provided me with great insight to their program and style. also, if you're interested in learning autocad and illustrator, i couldn't recommend the instructors we had enough... to be able to acheive what they got us to in 6 weeks with autocad and illustrator is just disgusting. if anyone is looking for a summer program with a strong digital component, berkeley's is it. if you're looking for more conceptual 3d model type program, i highly recommend sci-arc's summer program as well.
alex or thevillain_ what was your first choice? rice? does that mean you're going to decline mich's generous offer? i think there's something to be said about a school who offers you a really good deal...
we should be on a first name basis at this point. call me bird. will you know i'm talking to you if i just say alex? hmmm, there seems to be a plethora of alex's on this thread though... you'll know it's you based on context i suppose. it's hard for me to refer to these usernames when i know actual names. weird!
bird...I did call you bird didn't I?!?! no declining, i'm still going to the OH. one reason Rice is so appealing is because they like to give alot of support. I know a number of people who received full rides from them. they were very cryptic in my email stating im in 'with support'.. so i'll just have to see.
Right now it's between mit(if I get off wait), rice(if I get $), mich, and gsapp. in no particular order.
alex_ you sure did call me bird. so, what is you get off the waiting list at mit, but they don't give you any aid and it's 3 years? just wondering because mit was my reach and i thought i'd be willing to go broke to attend, but now that berkeley's given me mucho dinero, i really hope i don't get in and probably won't anyway, so there will be nothing to worry about.
i'll be attending the mich open house too since my sis and i already have our travel accomodations. i better not fall in love. glad you're still considering mich...i think they made you a great offer :)
well if I do get off the list I'll have to talk to mr. yung ho chang about the possibility of aid later on down the line and length of the program.. etc. not holding my breath on any of that, just options right now.
the thing is, schools in the price range of mit/rice will still be 30k+ less than gsapp when I graduate(with a scholly!). I feel like gsapp is slowly slipping away.
michigan did offer me alot, which is great. but I feel like the program might be to fast.. and, it's in the midwest.
wait -
I'm not sure about the numbers. I think the Design & Computation focus is the most popular though. I hope to get accepted, but I'm not sure I'll go (it will depend on money). Do you have other options out there?
can people please keep positng so we can get to page 39 quickly and no longer have to see that disgusting plastic weener plagued with plastic chemicals that'll leach into whomever should defile themselves with such yuck!!! melany_ you're a jerk! die, perv.
I am truly sorry to inform you that we are not offering you admission to MIT in the Department of Architecture. The number of applicants for admission to the Graduate School greatly exceeds the number that can be accommodated and it has been necessary to refuse admission to some fine applicants.
We appreciate your interest in MIT and sincerely hope that you may be able to continue your studies elsewhere.

Looks like I could be heading to NYC! (if MIT doesn't want me I doubt the GSD does!)
NON-AP GSD M.ARCH I PEOPLE WHO HAVE RECEIVED ACCEPTANCE PACKAGES:
1) DID YOU RECEIVE AN EMAIL LIKE ZOON'S, POSTED ABOVE?
2) ARE YOU ABLE TO ACCESS THE DECISION FORM HERE?
THANKS.
haha, no doubt. but then again, maybe not. I'd feel like I'm in over my head if they just barley accepted me, and I'm already not adept at all that scripting and process oriented stuff.. BUT, that's exactly why I applied there.
the folks from mit who created processing are on some other level type shit. really intelligent and beautiful work! yunez introduced me to their work and we always dreamed of writing out our own design script, but it's really not that easy... but yeah, mit should be more people's #1 instead of harvard or even yale.
hellraiser_ i wasn't speaking to you directly, son. all i'm saying is that it seems like people are really hyped on harvard because it's harvard rather than what really matters. not that i've done a ton of research on these schools, specially the ivy's, but yes, i just think mit's program is truly the best. i don't know, in my opnion, it would be insane to choose harvard over mit, unless they maybe gave an applicant more $
let's get to page 39 already...i'm not going to shut up until we do!
but i totally get it...i want my rejection from mit already so i can freaking move on.
yeay!!! just got my mit rejection email! this feels great. no longer will i have to wonder... thanks for not adding drama to the mix. i should thanks sir bennett. he was really nice to me.
it's cool, mit. i understand that if it's not meant to be, it won't. i don't think my computer geekery is up to par with you genius' anyway.
there are so many signs to watch out for... one must stive to be truly connected and in touch with what the universe is trying to communicate. vibrations for berkeley are high!!!

no they are not! my freaking hy-bird better not drive me off a cliff. i'm joking, but shouldn't be. many have died. i should make them feel guilty. no, i shouldn't do that. it's not the guy at the dealership's fault. what a crazy day. very up and down...like the weather in sunny california these days.. well in la at least. the sun will come out, then the clouds will hover. who cares, it's still almost 80 degree.
hell yeahhh im in gsd! sorry couldn't keep up with qs following my q. i sorta went mad for about 4 hours. now i'm back to sanity world to answer. i applied for M.Arch ll (did 5yrs for my B.Arch). now it all comes down to $$! fingers crossed since the hard part is over. thanks all and good luck with ur decisions. life is pretty good now :)
whoever posted that archdaily link regarding tron legacy.. thank you, that was awesome, and really makes me reconsider gsapp's place on my list. and, jeff bridges?.. dude abides.
back to work...gotta run these damn sif files through orderline and fix any errors. i would never recommend working in the commercial furniture industry. it's stupid!
thanks word2bird! this is the only acceptance that i know of from the 4 schools i applied to. so definitely relieved to see the painfully hard work (almost killed me this yr) come to fruition. just when i was starting to sink in my misery!
cheers
yeah it was, sorta my (out of) reach school. this definitely proves that u never know who or what they're looking for, there's no checklist. my gpa's 3.14 and GRE's 1170, 4.5. that's not exactly up to the caliber. i don't thinkanyone can be labeled harvard-or any ivy for that matter- material until they get accepted. even then, u still have to prove urself and themselves right!
passerby1ce/sweetpotato/bird - To continue the conversation I started two pages ago about not being *seriously* pumped about any of my admittances but being to old to give this all another go, but haven't had a time to respond to; so far I have been accepted to CCA and UT Austin, and I have yet to be rejected by any of the rest I have applied to which have started to notify; UCLA, Berkeley, UW, UO, and of course I haven't heard anything from Sci-Arc or UPenn.
Believe me, I am happy about even just these two admittances and I know both are good schools, UT being ranked pretty high on most of the lists people cite. It's just that what I see in terms of work from school's like Sci-Arc, UCLA, UPenn, and Berkeley, which really tickle my pickle, I don't see much of in UT's student work, and I see a tad bit from CCA. I will reserve total judgement until after I visit and really see how both schools work of course, and I may really find a place for myself when I do. I know UT has a kick ass reputation, I just need the open house a week from today to show that this reputation fits me.
@Sweetpotato - 22 is young! If you know you can kick some ass in the next round of apps with what you learned, by all means take a year and develop your goods! I wish I was in your place at 22, or even 25, haha, so yeah, you're in a killer spot to give this all another round.
@bird - I know I shouldn't settle, and I'm almost positive that if (95% chance that I will) I choose a school within the next month and attend this coming fall, I wont be. I am really looking for reasons to love the school's I have (and hopefully will) get into, and I believe that I won't have to look that hard. It's just at this point, I haven't heard back from any of the schools that I don't have to look for them at, which is where these reservations come from.
Attending arch school this coming fall is a bit more urgent to me for reasons more than just my age and that I would be delaying graduation from 31 to 32, it's also that I just know architecture school is the place for me and something inside of me just craves it. I'll often just drive up to sci-arc to hang out, groove on the vibe, and check out studio's I wish I were enrolled in. I really do need to get into an environment like this, sooner rather than later.
tyMArchII - Did you get accepted to the SMArchS - Design and Computation? I just saw an update on grad cafe about it. I would really dig seeing your application materials. I am interested in possibly applying to this program in the future (the way future), for M. or Ph.D.
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!

Hello All:
Today is a new day, so I am checking back in to see if any MIT - SMArchS Applicants have been contacted yet.
Either MIT is taking their time with SMArchS people, or... well I don't really want to go there just yet.
Thanks Again...
still no word from MIT; just keep waiting impatiently.
alex or thevillain_ what was your first choice? rice? does that mean you're going to decline mich's generous offer? i think there's something to be said about a school who offers you a really good deal...

Cococha, I haven't received an official package and I can't get through the link either.
TIME TO CELEBRATE!!!
by the way, what focus did you apply for with the SMArchS program? I'm Design & Computation.
What about you GSD MArch I non-AP accepted people?
Any email?
Able to access the decision form here?

@tyMArchII
I applied for the Design and Computation focus as well. Do you have any idea how many people may have applied for the SMArchS Program?
Also, do you know if they accept 20-25 people per focus or for the entire SMArchS class?
oh yeah. i've heard great things about philly. i mean how about the legendary roots crew is from there. nuff said!
do you feel like you maybe have too many choices? i only have 3 and am feeling overwhelemed. i'm a little scared i might fall in love with tcaup :/
well if I do get off the list I'll have to talk to mr. yung ho chang about the possibility of aid later on down the line and length of the program.. etc. not holding my breath on any of that, just options right now.

no, I'm so glad a have options. last time I had zero options, and I know how bad that sucks.
very true! those of us who have options should be soo lucky. i'm really thankful. i mean i really really coudln't have dreamed of better for myself.
let's go to pg 39

word2bird: I honestly don't give a fuck about Harvard, I just want to more fully determine whether I have been rejected. Been waitin' long enough boy.
I probably would've chosen MIT over Harvard too but couldn't get my app in on time for Dec 15 (GSD's deadline is later and gave me more time).
the folks from mit who created processing are on some other level type shit. really intelligent and beautiful work! yunez introduced me to their work and we always dreamed of writing out our own design script, but it's really not that easy... but yeah, mit should be more people's #1 instead of harvard or even yale.

seriously, i'm sure you worked very hard. angle for $$$
so i think what impresses me about those admitted into ivy's is that i know that took some hardcore HARD WORK!
so although i personally have an aversion to them...i salute those who made it in.
mad props!

Congrats, zoon and all the other GSD acceptances! You guys must me on top of the world right now!
