I see some of you are considering a summer Intro to Arch program. I recommend the program at Cornell. 6 weeks but they do teach a lot. I can share more details if anyone is interested. The program as GSAPP is a little lighter in terms of content but still very good. I assume RISD also has a summer program that helps for the Portfolio :-)
Trip down to Boston ... from GSAPP ! Looks like fun ! But quick question... Can we attend the open houses w/o the acceptance :-)
spoke with sara mccarthy at berkeley and the "nomination" for the fellowship that covers all of tuition, fees + $10k stipend for the 2010-2011 academic year is legit. she explained that they use the word "nominate" since the fellowship will be from the graduate division and not the department, but that it's a given and only takes my enrollment and some administrative paper work.
i am just soo humbled by the offer. it's too much, really. un-be-freaking-livable!
thank you, berkeley. for making it very difficult for me to even consider u of mich at this point. unless mich and somehow make it worth it. i wonder how that works...
@mitboi- I can only speak for the Harvard GSD Career Discovery Program, but I would highly recommend it. It's a six week program, with 3 two week projects. While you are there, there is a history class, a photoshop/ computer creative suite/ 3D modeling class, lectures, panels, and really engaged instructors (at least, that was my experience.) I also think the emphasis on conceptual thinking was very helpful.
My application included a recommendation from one of my instructors there, and the only architectural component of my fine arts-based portfolio was also from that program. (I was a studio art major.) With that, I got into all of my choice programs.
Villain, when I spoke to the dean at rice yesterday she said they would be sending out the official letter today. So I would assume we would receive it sometime between tomorrow and Tuesday. I guess I'll see you guys at the open house!
I also got into the GSD! @mitboi, I've also been accepted into yale, berkeley, cornell, columbia. I don't have my portfolio online, but I will work on getting some of it up. My portfolio was rather personal, and extremely theoretical. It does not go online well because it was handmade, and has protruding pages.
thanks for the shout out, tzara. i wonder if the fellowship has anything to do with being a woman of color. probably not, since i think filipinos fall under the asian category and as we all know, there are just as many asians in universities as white folks...
either way, i'm happy to take berkeley up on their offer. i was really really starting to sweat about the $$$, so this is beyond perfect!
you have drawing skills, but im afraid that you are using them in the wrong way, especially when you show them to an admissions committee for an architecture school. I dont think that you want to show that you can render something through a drawing, the school will teach you how do to do that on the computer. instead, use your drawing skills to be creative and think. i believe that drawing is a very important skill (my portfolio on pg. 29 is all drawings and i have no arch. background either) in order to impress the committee you need to show them however you can that you are able to think through drawing, and solve a problem in this way.
hope this helps. good luck
follow up on Hattie's post. upgrade for now ( cannot leave work yet to check my mail...although Toronto might still be a day or so late). but got the Princeton envelope last night:
YALE - in
GSAPP - in
PRINCETON - in with AP
GSD - ( ready to bet? )
Stats:
- 3 terms Univ. Arch and Urb. _ Bucharest ROM
- Hon. B. Arch. Sc. _ Ryerson Univ. Toronto CAN.
@o1nichols, thanks for the suggestion. greatly appreciate it. your portfolio is def. very inspirational and provides a good direction on what a portfolio from a non-arch would be like, thx!
Hey Nikki. Hey Hattie. I am literally outside my apartment posting from my phone as the mail man is chilling at Wendy with some nuggets before he gets to my home. 16 Celsius don't harm anybody in any case ;)
Konichiwa Blick! thanks! (loved your portfolio btw).
I'm in Chicago, been working here for a little less then a year now. And yes...the mail has arrived in chicago....its killing me.
I'm definately doing the open houses...not sure if i want to got to yale's or mit's. Im flying into NYC for columbia's on the 6th and flying out out of boston on the following sunday. hoping to hit yale and mit in between. We should coordinate on planes, trains, automobiles and crash pads.....
I just have the impression (maybe the wrong one) that Yale doesn't have as much depth to their program as I would like. It's a great school with great design coming out of but still MIT tempts me more.
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE OF YOU OR IF YOU KNOW ANYONE GOT INTO A "GOOD" SCHOOL SUCH HAS HARVARD,YALE,COLUMBIA,MIT,CORNELL,UPENN,UCBerkeley,UCLA WITH A GPA UNDER 3.2 AND SO.
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!

Sbeth85,
Wow I had no idea Rice's class was so small. Curious, what option did you apply for?
thevillian,
I didn't think to ask unfortunately, she just said soon. Maybe you should call to find out (=
Questionable - I accept you for who you are! Do they invite waitlisters to the open house?
im still waiting to hear about UT as well.

Bird- THAT IS AWESOME!!! Congrats!!! I'm excited for you!!
@babybokchoy, thanks again. Just wondering which schools did you apply to? Do you have your portfolio shared online? thanks.
I got a big fat envelope in the mail from GSD just now!!! MArch I AP - accepted!!
Okay, I just got into the GSD.
USPS; received by Princeton Mail Services today at 10:13:03am
Sent: March 15th, 2010.
They want me to take calculus over the summer. There's no way I'm doing that.
calculus blows
Congrats WorkingHoot and waqas!! I can't stand calculus though!
WorkingHoot - where are you located?
The package went to my parents in Michigan. Thank god my mom works from home!!
Congrats on the GSD acceptances!!!! Well done!!!!
Villain, when I spoke to the dean at rice yesterday she said they would be sending out the official letter today. So I would assume we would receive it sometime between tomorrow and Tuesday. I guess I'll see you guys at the open house!
Yehawww Congrats on the GSD kids!!
Ok so, I've heard from all the places I applied so here's the final tally:
Harvard GSD - IN with AP standing
Princeton - IN with AP standing
Yale - IN
Columbia - IN
RISD - IN
Wow that feels good!
Stats again:
- University of Michigan undergrad with a BFA and a BSArch
- graduated Spring '09
Now to think about making a decision...
Good luck to everyone now that the GSD has finally decided to grace our mailboxes!
Waqas, can you take calculus at a community college? It will probably suck less.
Workinghoot, I believe you have everyone's dream tally
waqas - you can actually take business calculus instead, it does not suck nearly as much as regular calculus.
Workinghoot - Hattie?
Hey Luis :)

congrats on cornell! i mean...it's cornell!!!
mitbol, sorry this is late.

@babybokchoy, thanks again for the info!
Hey Nikki. Hey Hattie. I am literally outside my apartment posting from my phone as the mail man is chilling at Wendy with some nuggets before he gets to my home. 16 Celsius don't harm anybody in any case ;)
lol what is happening
I'm skipping Yale for MIT. I'll be at gsapp the day before.
Hattie are you in NYC? Nikki Chicago? Rick?
Why are you skipping Yale for MIT?

We're gonna have a kick ass TCAUP reunion soon, I can tell!
tcaupers,
Konichiwa Blick! thanks! (loved your portfolio btw).

Congrats x a million Bird.
PS to all:
Calculus is wonderful! I can't believe I waited 25 years to learn it. Hopefully my love of math means my buildings won't fall down.
I just have the impression (maybe the wrong one) that Yale doesn't have as much depth to their program as I would like. It's a great school with great design coming out of but still MIT tempts me more.
@soni: barring little to no funding from Rice, I'll be at the open house.
So far, everyone who got a yes from the GSD, was it for MArch1 or MArch2?
In at GSD for MDesS.
GSAPP (MSAUD) - in
UMICH (MUD) - in
MIT (SMARCH w/ urban certificate) - guessing no
SCI-ARC (Scifi) - ?
thats it...I cant take it any more....im leaving my job to go check my mail. here goes............
Hi another person (from tcaup) who has never posted but has been glued to the thread. Just got into GSD M.Arch I!
Columbia - Yes
Princeton - Waitlisted
Michigan - Yes
Harvard - Yes
Good luck to all and for those who applied to GSD, check your mail!
Haha. Awesome Nikki! Unfortunately I don't think any of us are being very useful at work anyway... hoping my productivity returns soon now.
In the voice of Chandler (Friends):
"Can UT Austin BE anymore irritating?!"
Let's get on with the decisions, brotha!!! Either reject me or put me on a bloody waitlist. DO SOMETHING!!!!
hey luis,
im in chicago right now...any news for you about gsd? where are you?
-rick
congratulations to your acceptances.
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE OF YOU OR IF YOU KNOW ANYONE GOT INTO A "GOOD" SCHOOL SUCH HAS HARVARD,YALE,COLUMBIA,MIT,CORNELL,UPENN,UCBerkeley,UCLA WITH A GPA UNDER 3.2 AND SO.
IF SO, PLEASE RESPOND. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE
Congrats everyone!
Does this mean no more FedEx?
Anyone overseas got accepted to GSD this week?
Btw please post your stats if you have the chance:
http://thegradcafe.com/survey/post.php
I did get in at Columbia and Harvard with a lower gpa, which was from a bad first year that I spent the rest of my college years making up for.
