There's NO way you are going to turn this down, and it sure beats getting a place in another prestigious ivy but with no $$$. Let's throw a celebratory party with that $10,000. What do ya say? lol.

Congrats to all who have gotten into their first-choice schools, especially if they offered some coin along with admission!

For what it's worth, I've decided to enroll at my own first-choice school... I dropped by the University of Cincinnati this afternoon and gave them my tuition deposit. I guess that means I'm officially a Bearcat now.

Russian gypsies say that if your second toe is longer than the big toe you are going to have the dominant position in your marriage. True story.

hmm...i'd like to think i have the dominant position in my marriage. though i'm not married, still, i've been with my partner for like 9-10 years. that's weird.

but i like to think i'm the boss, but maybe he's actually the boss. who knows. i allow him to be the boss because i know i'm the boss. maybe...

bird, check your left palm... is the heart line long, deep and unbroken? (it's the most horizontal line, toward the top)

Congratulations, Bird!!

These schools are EXPENSIVE and I have no money. It looks like I'll have a huge loan + no shopping and no restaurants for the next three years? Uh oh :(

word2bird

damn, pult! you read palms too? it's deep and unbroken... it stops at a certain point though.

poor grad student is the life!!! thanks, waqas! congrats on the mit bit... it's cool you got a letter + $, though no crazy phone call.

soni : congrats, we applied to the same schools for post-prof. im waiting to hear from GSD as well, but i think im leaning towards Rice no matter what.

if Rice applicants wanted to see more student work, i found this buried on their website.

Congrats word2!!! fellowship and stipend sounds pretty sweet.

A lot of filipinos/filipinas in the house! your stats are almost similar to mine, except for the major, and GPA.

Wondering if you've shared your portfolio? and what kind of work are you doing now?

congrats again!

bird, that's good. you are devoted and loving in relationships. however, if the line stops abruptly it means your past relationships may have detrimental effects on your subsequent ones. essentially, if the left endpoint is low (line doesn't curve), you haven't had much happiness in love before you met your partner. and the further right the point is, the stronger your past problems will affect your life together, especially in marriage.
but remember - you are devoted and loving. now check his to make sure he's committed!

Just heard from Berkeley = IN! w/ 10k fellow

Mar 17, 10 10:47 pm  ·

word2bird

pult!!! how do i find out if he's committed based on his palm. well, 9 years proves it and the fact that he remembers our anniversary date more than i do... so intense. how does thou know thee so well?

10k stipend would be amazing! i better get that fellowship. don't do me this way, berkeley.

posted my folio on page 23, i think. really simple, possibly too simple. kinda feminine... maybe.

pult,

what if i am a 21 year old wasp who has been in a relationship for 15 years on and off (mostly on) and i have the signs for past relationships being or becoming detrimental to my current relationship (and only) all right here on my hand. what does that mean? have i had bad relationships that i am unaware of?

Mar 17, 10 10:53 pm  ·

Pythagoras

guyforget, congrats ! wow, seems like Berkeley's more generous than expected, what with the dour state Cal is in right now.

and are you by any chance a filippino/filippina? and what are your stats? It appears to me that there's a small community of creative filipino population here rocking the world of arch grad schools !!! well done : )

Pult, seriously? That's all BS. The only thing I believe in are fortune cookies. But you have agency because it only comes true if you eat the cookie.

Mar 17, 10 10:54 pm  ·

Pult

o1nichols,

Look for a (usually) large triangular formation on your right palm - it is located in the center of the palm, between the intersections of your head, life, and fate lines (the three main lines). if the triangle is not locked from all sides - don't worry, your childhood affairs and subsequent trauma will not haunt your adult life. if the triangle is closed, however, you will have issues graver than past failures to worry about.

I have not had the honor to call myself filippino, but I did eat some filippino food (some of my favorite) the other day in SF, so maybe that did the trick? Regardless, six months ago I was thinking of becoming a lawyer, so things are better now...

WUSTL = in
UO = in
CCA = in
Cincinnati = rejected
Berkeley = in
UT = ?, but thinking not since i have not heard
UW = ?
CO = ?

Mar 17, 10 10:59 pm  ·

o1nichols

pult,

hmm. well i do have a triangle where you say that i shouldnt, but its split in two vertically. does that count as two triangles? maybe i should diagram this.

Mar 17, 10 11:03 pm  ·
 ·
word2bird

tyler...did your letter also say it that they'd like to "nominate" you for the "prestigious" graduate opportunity program fellowship? are you white? or a person of color?

Mar 17, 10 11:06 pm  ·
 ·
Pult

o1nichols,

I said you ~should~ have that triangle. Now, if the fate line forks out to intersect the closed triangular formation, it usually indicates an inability to pursue one's happiness holistically - you will always have to choose something over an equally important choice. The palm should tell you more about this - is the left triangle larger? That would mean you will have a successful career. A larger right triangle will indicate that you will focus more on yourself and maybe your family and health.
Now, this is not a bad case at all, as it is not uncommon. However, if the general triangular formation is very tight (meaning all your major lines are closely positioned), you will have persistent obstacles along your way.
Are you an Aries or a Gemini perchance? If you're really 21 (b. 1989 in North America) and are one of those signs, Saturn was located in the 3d and 11th houses at the moment of your birth, which indicates a life of limitation (obstacles) to reiterate what your palm triangle is saying. It would be a harder life that I would wish for you, I'm afraid. I shall pray for you tonight.

I'm a white boy - just 10k, but that for my first year with in-state makes my loans a wee bit more manageable. I hope to figure something out for my second and third years. Is the "prestigious" fellowship for students of color only? Sorry for my ignorance. CONGRATS! to you too! is UM still in the cards?

I didn't really get the stats thing at first, here is the rest:

29, Male, White/ Redneck
GPA: 3.8
Major: History/ Philosophy
Minor: English/ American Studies
GRE (what a scam): Verbal: 680 Quant: 570

Mar 17, 10 11:13 pm  ·

no kidding guyforget.. gre is like the LEED of standardized tests. just an arbitrary, money-making, machine.. for the record I was below Rice's 'mandatory' gre scores.

10,000 Fellowship. Is that you, Tyler?

Absolute Bull Shit! It looks like we can at least give Berkeley credit for that as it did not determine Bird's abilities on a worthless standardized exam... I am very anti-GRE, has nothing to do with intelligence or capability.

You still got into Rice, Villain? If not, because of GREs?, you shouldn't want to got here anyways.

o1nichols,

let's hope that you have developed your soul through good actions in past incarnations, because you'll need all the good karma to live this life. on the plus side, you'll be reborn with an upgraded life and a bonus of good fortune next time! have fun in grad school!

congratulations on all these acceptances! truly fantastic. it has been amazing to see everyone's immense efforts through the portfolios.

my friend has gotten into both parsons and pratt. i was wondering what everyone's preference/ impressions between those two programs were. thoughts?

Yeah Naomi! Congrats! It looks like they were looking to let some of us summer ruffians in after all. I thought at first that they would not really care if we did the program or not, and maybe they didn't and just thought we had okay ports? Emily too, right? Awesome...

tyler and naomi_ what time did you both get the email from sara? mine way 5:58pm today. r u both set on berkeley?

i hated the gre's...worst time of my life. just wanted to get out of there and kept having to take breaks to pee because the room was so cold. then, when they made me write that statement about i am who i say i am in cursive, i wrote too big and had to ask for another sheet...to which the crooked lady said "that's part of the test, you fail" cruel joke. that bitch. anyway, i really am terrible at tests...so i'm glad berkeley was able to see past that. i wonder how they chose us [in]arch folks.

congrats naomi! i knew you'd get in.

the only way u of mich is still in the picture is if i don't get this fellowship thing and can dome how leverage more money out of mich...i ain't rich. i'm going wherever's cheapest. :/

@ bird, guyforget and thevillian - you guys have totally vindicated my thinking that GRE is but a silly, time wasting test which makes little sense in determining the applicant's true abilities. And it makes me feel better to know that schs such as Berkeley doesnt give a damn abt this bs test. I was just wondering if GRE scores had pulled my application dwn by 1000 notches (and effectively bumming me out of a place in grad sch, since there are prob less than 1000 applicants).

seems like the people at ETS test centers have been trained to be nasty to test takers. I didnt give a damn, and when my GRE was over, I returned to the office, and gave that bitch 2 tight slaps. I cldnt have done it any better to relieve the stress she induced on me.

Im never going to take my GREs again. The time and $ could be better spent/saved for my portfolio/summer studios/digital cam for grad sch.
