I applied to a broad spectrum of schools; we'll humbly see what happens next. I'm really hoping for wash u, and risd to accept me. However, i'm starting to get a bit angsty though since people have been hearing back from some of these programs.
And congrats to those who have heard the great news from their select schools. I hope you all do great things in the field of architecture :)
i like your portfolio. clean layout, really liked the surrealist sculpture - but i found a typo on page 42 in the professional model section: you didn't spell "preparation" correctly. doubt that many admissions people caught that.
I know this isn't a PhD forum, but I nonetheless found the comic's depiction of grad school life amusing. At the very least, it provided me with some "grad school related" activity besides my compulsive checking of archinect/gradcafe. Helps ease the nerves...Maybe it can do the same for you?
It was about something I wrote for an article my freshman year in undergrad. It was a play off of Franklin's quote, "never confuse motion with action", and I suppose it kind of has the same connotation.
I feel for this kind of undergrad work and with some of the sketching that I do to find forms, a line in a sketch shouldn't be a literal or strict representation of a wall. It can represent a lot of different things, such as a connection in a network or a figurative relationship. And this understanding allows me as a designer to be more open with my illustrations and representations.
Also, i suppose it just sounds half way intelligent and it's broad enough to let the reader develop their own interpretation of it.
I must say I was super impressed with the faculty at Princeton - more-so than any of the other schools I researched... everyone is very well-connected and very accomplished. And structures professors are principals of Arup!??? Yes, please.
NC State is in a close race for my top preference. It's also the only school where I also applied to the MLA program - somewhat on a whim and as a backup option.
Anyone think applying to two programs at the school hurt my application?
Out of curiosity I check my MIT application status page to see if it says...NO...I bet we are getting our "No"s soon...on the status page it says something like my application status was last changed today....I bet they are gearing up for the rejects...oh well...
lidandan, can you lend some information on the University of Florida, I applied to both the architecture & urban and regional planning programs. Already accepted into Planning and waiting to hear from Arch. Planning on visting hopefully in Aprilore about the school, but until then, how would you describe the grad school? Any info is much appreciated!
I think there must be some sort of mistake with GSAPP. There is no way all these excellent candidates could be rejected. I think they fucked up. Serious. Someone who got an email from them (I did not) should email them just to double check that they were actually rejected. I am pretty much 100% sure there is a mistake and all the people who got rejections today actually got in.
Which means I didn't get in. Because I got nothing today. And there is NO status change on my website page. sigh. I'm so confused.
Are the people who accepted getting emails from the school to check their status as well?
So i'm at home and bored and tired of playing with the dog...and there will be no further word tonight, particularly concerning GSAPP. the lucky fools like myself who have made it thus far without an actual reject will just have to comfort ourselves with the cold blanket of silence until morning.
so in the mean time, i thought it might be fun (and helpful to those applying next year) to share our reasons behind applying to the schools we were applying to. i began doing all the schools, but it seemed that might just be an overload of information. so how's about everyone pick a single school or two, and share...
so to start off:
(1)Yale-
why i applied (in no particular order): the first year building project. also, when i went to visit at the open house, i didn't hear the words environmental or sustainable even once. (for the record i'm LEED AP, i just get sick of all of the endless empty rhetoric). and the professors sounded very smart. the people, other prospective students i met, were very nice, i thought i could get along with them. and the new building is so new and beautiful. and they give you a studio computer to work with. the school had a great air about it; everyone was proud to be there, and i value that in a learning environment. michele addington teaches environmental (as in how your body feels in the space, not as in solar panels) systems there, and she is awesome. i liked the program structure as described by the faculty, beginning with small elements and gradually working up during your years there to large building and full site design. i knew some people who graduated from there twenty years ago who thought it would be a great fit for me. also, you get to take the most electives in their program. because stern is well respected as an educator. and finally, because i wanted to go to a school that when i looked at the work done by the students i could honestly say, "i want my work to look like that," this was my experience at the open house. and all of the presenting students looked so professional and were so articulate and well dressed, despite lack of sleep. maybe i'm easily impressed. maybe they handed out speed like candy the night before the open house.
drawbacks/reservations...i'm a little afraid of the "idea" of new haven. super expensive.
(2)GSD
the exchange program with ETH. if i spoke german, i would have definitely applied to ETH as an international student. GSD has a reputation as a school that turns out people who actually know how to build. also, if you take a "the proof is in the pudding" approach, their impressive list of famous alumni suggest they're doing something right...even if everyone i know who's graduated from there hated it. the gsd zine is very respectable. hard to beat those starchitecture studios, which i hear from these same friends who didn't exactly love their time at gsd, are awesome. the open group studio space i've heard is beautiful and just a rich and amazing experience. harvard seems very organized and together.
drawbacks/reservations...cambridge? also, the gsd seems a bit like an architect factory. and FOUR YEARS???!? you've got to be f*ing kidding.
i look forward to reading your posts. for example, i know nothing about MIT's program--i'm a little anti computer, so with the GSAPP exception, any program that focused on computer-y things fell off my radar. but you guys are so excited about it, so i'd love to hear what MIT is all about from your perspective.
wow, amazing what you can do with a floss pick, sixtrain.
about those stern calls...it's happened before. i know a person who got a personal call from the dean a few years back. an m.arch ii. as far as this year is concerned, though, melany's the only one i've heard who got a call.
also, for the record, i was not trying to suggest that stern does not call people. i know that it happens. it was really the entire post taken together that i took issue with.
yeah their post was a bit excessive. and i poked around at some earlier posts by them and they were all a bit "....really?". thats the only way i can describe them.

CVETT: there has been a lot of changes at UF in the past couple of years within the administration and the programs itself (new dean & directors, etc). they've had some interesting guest professors for semesters, and they are currently doing the european solar decathalon for this summer. One thing I really like is they finally started the Citylab: Orlando program with University of Central Florida's digital media department. They will supposedly have full-fledged studios in orlando! The professor that originally came up with that program is now at Univ South Florida, though. They also have some great study abroad programs in mexico, hong kong/china, and italy.
URP there is great, I always loved my URP classes there. Congrats on getting in!
i would say more but i sort of hold a grudge against that school and don't like to think about it too much...
it does seem way too many rejections than acceptances for GSAPP..
and about fake posting...
i know it happens occassionally on gradcafe,
but i find it hard to believe somebody will go out of their way to do it on this site.... logging in and all xp
so............im nervous about princeton.
my top top choice!
feel like this week is it...
I like your idea of sharing why we chose which schools, although i'm going to try and keep my reasoning a little shorter.
University of Michigan 2G (accepted)-
I have a lot of interest in digital design and fabrication, more as a design tool for developing a design and pushing the design to new limits (and im not that big on hand drawing). I think they're program offers a good mix between theoretical and practical design studios and offers lot of options to really pursue my own interests. They also offer a large number of elective courses to pursue different interests as well. I think the direction and focus of the program, especially with all of the outstanding faculty and Monica Ponce de Leon as the new dean is only getting better and in my opinion is creating a great learning environment for architecture. Also the possibility of applying for a dual MArch/MSc in Arch is important for me because i'd like to pursue my own research interests and possibilities of teaching once finished my MArch. The program structural and overall vibe I get from the school is great as well. I could go on and on about why I like it....
drawbacks: Fairly expensive as an out-of-state resident, large number of students (although I also see this as a good thing, more diversity)
Rice University (option II) -
Absolutely love the program layout with the core and advanced studios and love the idea of doing 2 and 1/2 years with the thesis being that last 1/2 year. I really think that gives the extra time to really develop a strong design and develop my own personal interests in the field. I think there is a good amount of interesting course offerings and I absolutely love the work that has been coming out of there the past couple years. I think Sarah Whitting as the new dean has brought a lot to the program. I think they also have a lot of very interesting faculty doing a lot of interesting work, such as mark wamble and albert pope (got to see him give a lecture at my undergrad school a couple years back and it was amazing, that is what made me interested in their grad school.) Also I like the rice village area in Houston and have some family that lives in the area
drawbacks: i hear they accept very few students (under 20?) so I have little hope that I will get in, The city of Houston, besides rice village and the med center is not user friendly (im used to east coast cities)
I rambled on a little longer then planned, and I apologize for any grammatical errors or confusing sentences.... I'm watching band of brothers (love the series, all-time favorite and can't wait for the Pacific series to start next week) which has kept me pretty distracted.
Well, I'm less interested in the validity of the acceptances/phone calls of melany and more curious to see the Portfolio that Launched a Thousand Acceptance Letters.
I picked the schools on my list for a lot of good, different reasons that I cannot remember right now. for the most part it was projects i had seen on their websites / insight from people i know that go there and $$
Just got my rejection e-mail from Columbia. The admissions office there is so beyond obnoxious, I am not surprised that they would not waste a sheet of paper on my rejection.
And yes, I am also hoping to get an e-mail that my rejection was a mistake (aren't we all), but it looks like lots of qualified applicants, including some posters on this board lost out.
RISD is my top choice next to columbia, and at least, they send out a "real" letter by mail. (slightly more respectful, don't you think) So does Sci-Arc, for anyone who was wondering.
I applied to:

GSAPP(rejected)
RISD (no news)
I am one of those idiotically optimistic people that papered the country with applications. It was a lot of paper work.
Has anyone heard from any of these other schools yet? From what I am told, no news (after other people have actually received rejections) is good news.
Also: has anyone gotten into princeton, penn, or gsd, while still rejected from GSAPP? I have an art history professor who told me I would never make an ivy league school, and any school but an ivy league school would be a waste. I would love to get on a waitlist (even if I don't end up going just to spite her!)
Could use a serious morale boost right now (and a drink).
I applied to M Arch 1 at GSAPP and was rejected. i wonder whether Traced was an M. Arch I candidate (he or she was accepted to something there). It's a near-impossible school to get into, so don't feel bad. We are all in the same boat.

cheers, mate
i liked the surrealist sculpture too. i didn't look at a single word in your portfolio so i didn't catch the typo. reading is hard.
now i will go back to waiting for the rest of my non-ivy-league schools to get back to me.
Realllly hoping I get some kind of news soon. Not hearing back from anyone is driving me nuts
anyone heard from any Urban Design programs??

Just wanted to share an awesome comics website with you guys:

hey waqas....
any inside scoop on Princeton progress??
MSAAD here. Anyone else?
It was about something I wrote for an article my freshman year in undergrad. It was a play off of Franklin's quote, "never confuse motion with action", and I suppose it kind of has the same connotation.
I feel for this kind of undergrad work and with some of the sketching that I do to find forms, a line in a sketch shouldn't be a literal or strict representation of a wall. The Princeton SoA calendar lists a Clio Hall Admissions meeting scheduled on March 10th at 10am. Later that day, there is a "Senior Faculty Meeting."
There was an all-day M.Arch Admissions meeting on February 26th.
Cool. Thanks, buddy. Are you applying?
I must say I was super impressed with the faculty at Princeton - more-so than any of the other schools I researched... everyone is very well-connected and very accomplished. And structures professors are principals of Arup!??? Yes, please.
Quick opinion poll:

B0S, LiG, wasssuppp. (UC undergrad probably going to UC's grad school in the fall).
We should hang out sometime!
Oooh la la! Checked my app status - accepted to OSU! I wonder when they offer you $$$?
jk3hl, i may have misread but didn't you say you were accepted into UC's grad school a few weeks ago (6 pages-ish in thread time).
Out of curiosity I check my MIT application status page to see if it says...NO...I bet we are getting our "No"s soon...on the status page it says something like my application status was last changed today....I bet they are gearing up for the rejects...oh well...
WHOA - ut applicants.. there was another acceptance on grad cafe just today... keep your spriits up!!
i applied to

thanks design99. best of luck to you too!

andimdone,
Aw... I hope they made a mistake too. I am hoping to get an email from GSAPP saying that the rejections are meant to be acceptances.
I wonder how they did the selections, select those whom they thought they should be out first?!!?!
Anyone actually called them??
So i'm at home and bored and tired of playing with the dog...and there will be no further word tonight, particularly concerning GSAPP. the lucky fools like myself who have made it thus far without an actual reject will just have to comfort ourselves with the cold blanket of silence until morning.

This is kind of late but I applied for MSAAD at Columbia. No money though. Still a welcome acceptance.
yeahbaby,
I like your idea of sharing why we chose which schools, although i'm going to try and keep my reasoning a little shorter.
University of Michigan 2G (accepted)-
I have a lot of interest in digital design and fabrication, more as a design tool for developing a design and pushing the design to new limits (and im not that big on hand drawing). Also the possibility of applying for a dual MArch/MSc in Arch is important for me because i'd like to pursue my own research interests and possibilities of teaching once finished my MArch.
