good luck! btw, how many schools have you applied to?
@ waqas
did you also apply to princeton? I heard they have a small M.Arch class. also, congrats on yale! really, you should spy on the princeton admissions committee. ;)
- also wondered, did everyone get reference letters from someone graduated from/taught at the schools you are applying to?
hope this is help to future generations of worriers, as it has been for me:
Applied to:
UT Austin - IN (By email 2/23; postal mail 3/8)
Parsons - IN (By phone 3/1)
Yale - IN (By email 3/8)
Princeton - ?
GSD - ?
Columbia - ?
Concerning the recommendations, I was lucky to have a bling-bling-esque collection of recommendation writers, but do not feel at liberty to give information about them, 'cause a couple of them are super private. But, I can say that without the amazing portfolio critiques of two of my rec writers, I would not have gotten into Yale. One even told me point blank "this will not get you into Yale." And then she told me how to fix it.
The point being (for future generations), maybe, it's not so important to have an all-star cast as it is to use the resources you have. Get your professors and professional recommendation writers to go through the portfolio with you page by page and give honest input. They need to see your portfolio to write a recommendation anyway. And I graduated from college seven years ago, so none of these people recently had me in classes, but they still took the time and THANK GOD cause things are working out really well!

i hope to hear something soon from someone. i wasnt nervous about anything until i started to read more into this discussion and was introduced to gradcafe. now i cant stop refreshing all of my windows!

MIT MArchI ADV - Accepted
Got my recommendation from Shin Takamatsu(my professor), Chiaki Arai(Architect of Rias Hall, recently featured in MARK magazine), and Katsu Umebayashi(Published his monograph from Princeton)
it was a painfully long and expensive process, but I wanted to ensure I'd get in somewhere I'd like to study. plus I can see who will give me the most amount of $ to do it.
I've applied to six schools and haven't heard from any yet. After not hearing from Yale yesterday, I got a little concerned (if my portfolio/application didn't get me into Yale does that mean it wont' get me into other top schools?)
But after looking back through the "2009 commemorate" I saw that a lot of people didn't get into Yale, but still got into GSD, GSAPP, MIT, Princeton... This obviously made me feel a lot better, so I thought I'd share in case others were feeling the same way. Stay positive!
exactly ambrosia! there's so many factors involved that it's pretty safe to say it's a crapchute.
the example that gets me through is that for undergrad (I know it's entirely different, but the basic principle is the same), my friend got rejected from UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego..... but got accepted into MIT the next week. womp womp.
ASU - IN
Clemson
Minnesota
U Penn
U Florida
SCAD
UNCC
I guess I really want to go to a state school or something.
I got my undergrad at U Florida. All my friends from there applied to WUSTL and got in yesterday, but I didn't apply there or any of the ivies except upenn (that was my reach school). $100k+ in debt just isn't for me.
Not so disappointed, but this is the first rejection I have received from any program after being admitted to all undergrad programs. It hurts in a good way!
Wow, haven't posted here in awhile. I applied as a MArch I (non-AP) and/or MLA candidate. No prior architecture academic/work experience or design studios and lacking a prerequisite here or there, but from my results so far the schools to be impressed with my stuff nonetheless. Received $$ in most cases.
I applied to:
Yale - accepted (email, +phone call later from Stern congratulating me on my outstanding portfolio)
MIT - accepted (congratulatory phone call from Yung Ho. Nice 10 minute chat with him)
meh, i'll just list the rest:
Virginia - accepted
Michigan - accepted
Washington (St Louis) - accepted
UT Austin - accepted
Parsons - accepted
RISD - accepted
Berkeley
Sci-Arc
Cornell
Columbia GSAPP
Harvard GSD
Princeton
Melany - That's quite is a compliment to get a phone call from Stern. Since you're a MArch I candidate (and didn't' do architecture in school) may I ask what your portfolio included (do you have previous architecture experience? did you include artwork, design work etc?)
Seriously melany, congrats and lets see that 'folio! haha

For those of us who check this thread constantly, but need a tiny distraction to keep things interesting... how old are all of you?
27 years old here... just finishing up a nine year bachelors degree.
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!
@ praxis99 and Pythagoras
good luck! btw, how many schools have you applied to?

lol guys face it, yale has rejected the rest. if you check gradcafe, u can see that bulk emails to accepted students are sent on the same date. here are the results for yale: http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=architecture&t=a&pp=250&o=i&p=6
"also wondered, did everyone get reference letters from someone graduated from/taught at the schools you are applying to?"
not everyone has that luxury i'm afraid
90four: i was being sarcastic. it's hard not to imagine what you could also do with 100K+ in terms of an investment for your future.
kap1720: i agree, no harm in applying to see what they throw your way.
I applied to 5 schools - the usual suspects:
GSD - ?
Yale - probably out
MIT - in by phone 3/5 (some$$ not sure how much yet)
Princeton - ? (really not counting on this one)
Columbia - ?
(stated roughly in the my order of choice - i really only applied to schools that i really want to go to and that i would spend my money on...)
My recs (i had 4): 3 GSD alums (2 were my Berkeley profs/ex employer, 1 current employer), 1 princeton alum (was my Berkeley prof)
where did everyone else apply?
now thinking about it, clearly the overdose of GSD alum recs hasn't helped me w yale :)
i dont think recs are that big of a deal tbh
i don't really think so either.. but it'll help along with the rest
i know that the portfolio will carry the most weight for sure
recs might help if they're on the fence about you.

bucku - was it email? or phone call from gsapp?
Congrats bucku! Via email?
Wow, GSAPP started to notify... Things are going really quick this year.
Anyway, congrats bucku!
melany: you are on a role! great start!
And which digree? Checking Gradcafe, it seems like they are notifying applicants of Advanced Architectural Design course.
Seriously melany, congrats and lets see that 'folio! haha

ras: I'm 21 and I guess my bachelor's would be the exact opposite of yours (I graduated a year early from NYU.. no monies) lol.
additional question I've been curious about/might make this week go by faster:
What are you all doing? If school, studying what? If work, doing what?
- I work at the Apple Store and work for a construction spec firm
