i agree with lidandan: why would they want to know more if they intended to reject you anyways? from the sounds of it, i doubt it will have much of an effect on your application. they were probably just calling to ensure it is not a significant issue before possibly extending an acceptance. (at least that's how i would read it).
congrats to those who were accepted by MIT! i wouldn't mind being woken up in the middle of the night to hear that.
i'm still awaiting word on wash u in st. louis, RISD, the university of oregon, the university of washington, and ohio state...
I definitely don't think that them calling you is a bad sign at all... I think in the worst case scenario they are trying to decide on a spot between you and another person and they are trying to weigh both applicants against each other in every way... if it happened in high school and you handled yourself well on the phone then I don't think this would hinder you.
Good luck, man! Ahhhh I haven't heard from any schools yet! The tension is killing me!
Woah, grats to the MIT crowd! It's making me wish I had the time to put an application together for the MIT program. I'm pretty stoked for you guys, even though I don't know any of you beyond this thread!
Those of you who have heard back from schools are you M.Arch I/II/III applicants? (1/2/3 year respectively, I know some schools flip the I/III programs in their titles) I was wondering if some schools may have different notification times for the different program tracks, if the I applicants hear back before the III, or vice versa.
Just wondering since I am an M.Arch III applicant and I remember when portfolio talk was going on in here, that the majority of you in the thread were I/II applicants.
Here's to hoping for more good news for all on this Friday!
just got call from MIT now!!! 2pm midwest time
watching archinect post about MIT admission was terrible
re-ckecking it like every 5 min
and area code 617 works
when it came up on my phone,
I was like, YES!
Yes! I just got a call from MIT too! Yung-Ho sounded reaaaally tired. Must have been calling people all day long. My first admittance! Hope to see you at the open house!
FYI....
Just called UT because I thought my LoR's were missing...they weren't. But I asked if all the decisions had been made. She told me that they hadn't gone through all of them and hopefully will be done by the end of next week. There's still hope.
sorry - thought i should introduce myself more -
i am class of 2007 from UC Berkeley
and i've been working in an architecture office in Paris for the past 2.5 years.. i told them early last year that i was applying for grad school already so before results came out, i was super nervous cus i would need to look for another job otherwise - i would be quitting no matter what
its nice to know that i will be going somewhere! congrats to the others that got into MIT too :)
Weird! You'd think they would do things a little more consistently. I got an email from UT Austin 2 days ago saying I'm in, but the front page of my utdirect site still says that they've received all of my materials and forwarded them to the graduate committee.
In any case, congrats to all!
And how many of us are still keeping our fingers crossed for a phone call from MIT?
sigh. I think my MIT boat has sailed away at this point. of course there's still hope, but having been through this before I can tell you there's not a good chance we'll see many more phone calls at this point. oh well. 0-2 so far.
I still have my fingers crossed for MIT...but my guess is they are done for the day. Based on passed years it looks like they notify over a fairly long period...so there is still hope.
I think my chances are super slim so I am not really too concerned with hearing from them...have my eye on a few others!
Hopefully everyone can relax a little this weekend!
yeah sorry to bring y'all down with that. it just seems that based on last year's results Yung Ho called on one day, and outside of a few emails here and there, that was it. and I had the same experience when applying to other "top teir" schools": one day of calls folllowed by silence/rejection letters.
anyways, my fingers are still crossed as well. and congrats to everyone who's got in so far! MIT's an amazing program!
well I had a 3.72, so by that logic I should've received a call, but didn't. H.A, your portfolio surely would excuse that gpa.
your lack of call, coupled with your strong design skill set, gives me hope that mit will come around, or doesn't know what they're missing and other schools will be falling over themselves for you.. and maybe me ;)
Would anyone who has been accepted in this first round care to share a digital copy of their submitted portfolio? I'm sure that it would be appreciated by all to see clear examples of successful applications.
Congratulations to everyone who has received positive responses!
MIT Architecture is one of the most prestigious and elite academic institutions in the world, you all should be especially proud of your achievements.
I'm just as anxious as the rest of you, and waiting on nine schools, none of which have posted responses yet.
10 days until most of us will have an idea of where we are next year, I think that it's the most invigorated and excited I have been for an event since I was a child awaiting presents on Christmas morning.
sci-arc applicants: how many of these various fin-aid forms are you filling out and sending to them by the march 15th deadline? it seems like a massive amount of paperwork and they're not very clear about which are required for graduates and/or independent status students.
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!

I applied to the 2 year programs/advanced standing where I could; 3 year for U Penn.
that is the "first professional degree" and "undergraduate degree in architectural studies or related" blah blah blah
just got call from MIT now!!! 2pm midwest time
watching archinect post about MIT admission was terrible
re-ckecking it like every 5 min

hope to hear more MIT on this forum
good luck everyone
Yes! I just got a call from MIT too! Yung-Ho sounded reaaaally tired. Must have been calling people all day long. My first admittance! Hope to see you at the open house!
yeah, when i saw the 617 number (and checking this thread all morning), i tried hard to sound surprised. :D
yea he sounded really tired
i applied to 8 school
and this was my first admission
now i can breath
cococha: where are you? seems like a lot of people who got the call were abroad + one californian, although it could just be random. just curious :)
im from illinois!
from university of illinois!
are any of you mit people advanced standing candidates?
Congrats MIT folks, that's fantastic!
For those that are in at UT, were able to see your result by simply checking the 'status check' website they gave us?
thanks jten!
alonso: nope. e-mail only.
people who got in to MIT....
did you guys applied for M.arch I or M.arch II?
Does anyone think that schools trade notes on applicants/candidates?
lewisandclark, i doubt it. they have too much on their plate already to cross-check hundreds/thousands of applicants. what gave you that idea?
FYI....
Just called UT because I thought my LoR's were missing...they weren't. But I asked if all the decisions had been made. She told me that they hadn't gone through all of them and hopefully will be done by the end of next week. There's still hope.
@sixtrain - i'm in california, so i thought that if i do get a phone call it'd be in the afternoon. but my phone rang at around 11am pst.
i did apply to MArch I AP, but Yung-Ho said that i'm in their regular MArchI program. I have a BA Arch from Berkeley.
just good ol' paranoia, jizzy
i applied M.arch I to MIT
Cococha ! i have a BA Arch from Berkeley too!! what year are you?!
sorry - thought i should introduce myself more -

i'm class of '05 UCB, currently based in San Francisco.
Praxis99- maybe I'll see you at the open house!
got accepted via website update to UT-Austin for MArch II.
Ncsu85: did you get an email as well?
ncsu85,
did you check your status via utdirect site?
yea ut direct, it said on the front page that i had been accepted, where it used to say 'your stuff was sent to committee'.
Thanks and Congrats!!!)
Unfortunately they are still "reviewing" my stuff at UT just like the rest 8 universities I've applied to..

I'm still hoping to get a call from MIT....or an e-mail from UT
Really? They call everyone in one day and that's it? I think I'm too optimistic to take that to heart right now.
yeah sorry to bring y'all down with that. it just seems that based on last year's results Yung Ho called on one day, and outside of a few emails here and there, that was it. and I had the same experience when applying to other "top teir" schools": one day of calls folllowed by silence/rejection letters.

you would think they would have this system figured out, i guess not. congrats and good luck to everyone.
5pm in Boston... So what time do they finish calling? 6pm?
H.A. : I'm surprised you haven't received a call yet. I remember your portfolio from many pages back, and being blown away by it.
I was just thinking the same thing, Villian. Hmmmm....
TheVillain, thanks for remembering my portfolio.
Well, the problem for me, is that I got a low GPA...it's 2.96
Hirano, the fact that you weren't called gives me hope for another round of acceptances.
ooo... that is a rough GPA... but your work certainly does speak for itself. Well beyond grades.
Yeah, the day is not over yet, and we still have some chances to receive emails. We still have hope.
well I had a 3.72, so by that logic I should've received a call, but didn't. H.A, your portfolio surely would excuse that gpa.

Similarly shocked that Hirano hasn't gotten a call -- there is hope yet!
I had a 3.92, so I think the GPA logic is out the window. =]
Wow, you guys got sooo high gpa! I've never seen people who got higher than 3.5 here in Japan.
hilarious. Hirano, your comment validates all the cynical ideas i hold about america's higher education standards.
Would anyone who has been accepted in this first round care to share a digital copy of their submitted portfolio? I'm sure that it would be appreciated by all to see clear examples of successful applications.

at this point sharing portfolio wouldn't matter
as we are anxiously waiting for more results to come out
but here is my copy

sick port brah.

Very clean presentation and graphics jten
Portfolios are great to pass the time... and to create a kind of 'archive' of good examples for next years commiserators.
