Similar to another question going on right now, but I want to know / hear about other's experiences with deferring, or trying to defer.
Basically - can it be done?
All of the schools that I got into for MLA I - GSD, Penn, UCB, UVA, say no deferring. They say it pretty explicitly that they will hold your materials for reconsideration next year, and it does stand to reason that if you got in one year, you would get in the next. But maybe not.
But in practice - can it be done? Will they let you? I am looking for solid facts / experience / evidence, not opinions.
My school was willing to work with me, just had to tell them my specific situation. I ended up deciding to go ahead and attend school this year instead of deferring (because I likely would have lost my scholarship, they have no way of guaranteeing their own funds much less a deferral student's). But if you have a solid case/reason, I wouldn't hesitate to send an email to the admissions director(s).
bandito, I deferred for one year from one of the schools on your list. I had a family emergency. The school was very accommodating and helpful. I was very impressed. With that said, I hear that you can only defer for very serious situations and for work experience or for travel.
Good luck.

Admitted - Defer? Can it be done?

Thanks!
I deferred for a year. Some schools allow it, some don't. The only way to find out for sure is to ask them...

Go for it.
