I am starting the MSAAD at Columbia this June, too.
I have applied to a room of UAH (University Apartment Housing),but they have not sent me any message. It seems hardly to get a room there. Thus, I am also looking for a room out of campus,but, your are right, I did not see any suitable room nearby Coulmbia in Craigslist website.
Do you know the regular price per month of a room nearby the school? Have you applied to UAH's apartment?
I am an international student (male), and I would like to share a room or apartment of which the rent per month will not exceed 800.
I don't know whether it is difficult to find a room under this range.

I would like to ask GSAPP student two questions regarding housing

1. Is it possible for a GSAPP student to live in Queens or Brooklyn?
because the rent is much cheaper there.

2. How do you think of taking 1~1.5 hour everyday by subway to go shool? Is it possible for a busy GSAPP student?

have you applied for Columbia housing?

lisidio, it's possible but i recommend staying in morningside heights. most people i knew who lived far from campus while i was there regretted it, some even moved closer afterwards. better to stay close to campus for the 3 semesters.

yes, I have applied for Columbia housing(UAH), but I do not know whether I can obtan a room because the school claim that housing is not guaranteed. I am an international student and can not arrive earlier to find an apartment. Thus, if I do not get a room from Columbia, I will face a seruois consequence, I will have to consider living out of campus but will not have enough time to find another apartment.

lisidio, from what i remember the notices about housing come at the last minute which doesn't make it easy to plan. however since you are starting in may or june, at a time when there is less competition for campus housing, it's not that bad. i applied and got something but it was too late and after i had already taken another place off campus. try to find someone who's in the program to share with; maybe there are other AAD students from your country, region, etc. i remember that there were quite a few groups of students who had done this (ie. a bunch of germans or argentinians sharing an apartment, etc.). there must be some way to link up with others in the same situation.

I was looking at some 2br apartments in Morningside area a week ago that had been reduced from 2400 to 2000 - it's a buyer's market these days. Even so, UAH housing is still preferable if you can wait for them.

Hi. I'm doing the intro to arch program at GSAPP this summer from 7 July until 7 August, I'd also like to find a month or so long sublet or apt sharing situation on the cheap.

Is it really 1-1.5hrs from Brooklyn? I've applied to Intro to Arch and was hoping to stay at Pratt (the reason being that I am in a fraternity and am hoping to stay with the Pratt chapter - there is not one at Columbia, which surprised me). Of course it wouldn't be anywhere near as bad for me as it would for a full time grad student, but I'd still reather not spend 2-3hrs a day on a busy metro.

yes, I lived in NEW YORK before, if you take metro to Columbia University from the center of Queens(Elmhurst) or Brookly(Filton), you will need more than 1 hour (1~1.5) because you need to transfer the train to #1 train(red line_ 116ST). You are correct, taking 2~3 hours everyday is very exhausting for GSAPP or any graduated students. However, it is possible to get a room only 400~650 per month in Queens or Brookly while the rents are averagely higher than 1500 in Manhattan.

yes, about your questions. i lived in bedstuy for a while while at columbia. the commute will take you about 1.5 hours, lisidio is right about this. i wont recommend it. especially there is one train i think is the G or F, they are always doing maintance on especially at nigth, there was times when i left columbia at 12, and got to bk at 3am. it sucks..

i would suggest queens, astoria, 125- or around that area.

Hey I will be attending the MSAAD beginning this June. I am looking for roommate(s). I would like to keep the of rent as low as possible around 700 would be fantastic, but I know how hard it can be to find something for that price. I am male in my thirties, easy going and respectful. I would prefer a motorcycle friendly place, but beggars cannot be choosers. My biggest problem is that I am in Los Angeles, and I will not get to NY until a couple days before school starts. I will be staying with friends when I get there, but it would be nice to have a place lined up.
