GSAPP AAD questionS

loulou

For those GSAPP AAD students, I have some questions if you would not mind helping me out. Thank you in advance.

Do you see people not passing the summer semester, or in other words, is it a very difficult semester to pass in terms of theoretical papers / writing?

How are students evaluated actually? ( no the standard answers at open house)

more desk critiques than pin up in general or depends by professor?

For the international students: was the level of English language in the theory classes a difficult challenge or relative to that found in architecture theory publications?

Thank you!

loulou - AAD is shaped by the individual and the work they put forth. The school understands the language barrier and sets up opportunities for tutors and proofreading for students. The papers are not that difficult - standard 10 - 30 page research papers. Most of the students are from abroad - when I was there 20 US students of the approx 120 class. English was a challenge for some students but by the end I feel everyone was at a fairly equal level. The subject matters more than the complexity of language use.

Crits depend upon the prof. Most like to present work digitally - meaning flash, movies, very little power point. Models are well excepted. Some profs use studio time for group crits at least once a week - some do almost all desk crits. Mid term and final reviews are open to the entire school and outside - they are in large rooms and interesting studios bring large crowds.

Very few people fail - you have to go out of your way or cheat to fail. The school is about giving you the opportunity to do YOUR best work
Work hard and forget about sleep - take advantage of everything

Summer is a bit slower than the other semesters - since MArch is out. Take advantage of the equipment like the CNC Mills, printing, and labs during the summer since these things will be in high demand during spring and fall.
