GSAPP - Financial Aid

abababab

I was wondering if any current GSAPP students could tell me a little bit about how the financial aid works. I have heard that the student's scholarship amount increases every year. Could someone give me an example of how much they were originally offered, and how it increased (if it did) over the years? I am currently on the wait list for scholarships, and will be starting the 3-year MArch program in the fall... Thanks!

I heard they are notorious for offering very little aid, but a friend on mine just got 15k in grants, so maybe not.

yea i'm trying to figure this whole thing out. I will only be going post-prof so 3 semesters starting summer w/ 18k scholarship. I just want to know....

1) when they send the fin aid package out

2) when it is disbursed

3) if I'll have to take out private loans (please no)

4) if and when you got an assistantship how much would it be and would that include a tuition waiver

5) housing stuff but that's for another thread

Read this article. Keep it in mind. Debt is no fun.

True Dat

ADavin...

unless you are going to teach skip the Masters! I left a kickass job to do my Masters... I was living with Zero Debt in my own home and making bank... Now I have more debt than I know what to do with, a job that pays less than 1/2 of my previous salary and I have to rent out my house cause I can't afford it anymore since my student loans are more than the mortgage. hmmm Grad school quite possibly wasn't the best decision that I have ever made. But I do have my MArch so that counts for something.... right? unfortunately not in this economy.

1.) you should have gotten a scholarship app around the same time as your acceptance letter.

2.) it's disbursed sometime around september; everything always takes forever to process.

3.) many people i knew took out private loans unless you have someone helping you with rent/living expenses in which case you shouldn't have to.

4.) you can only get assistantships 2nd or 3rd year and it's pretty decent depending on what position you get.. there are also plenty of work study opportunities on campus that pay pretty well.

5.) the farther you live away from new york, the better chance you have at getting apartment housing.

note: you get more scholarship $ if your parents are not rich and/or retired.

maya-

thanks for the feedback. Yea i did get the scholarship info but the loan estimates I had to call to get because they still haven't sent the fin-aid packages out.

I'm doing the 3 semester Urban Design program so my situation is a bit different.

Hopefully it all works out.

I did get numbers for teaching assistanships if people were wondering. Apparently the max tuition waiver you get is half but usually a bit less + a monthly stipend of a couple hundred bucks. Other positions are available but hourly.

voneckht,

By chance, do you have any info on when GSAPP assigns teaching assistanships for Urban Design? Thanks

it sounds to me like there are only a few available (for fall/spring) and you have to apply for them when they become available in the summer

yes seriously, unless you can get at least 50% scholarships and grants to pay for your architectural education than there is really no point in getting M.Arch degree and ending up with a load of private/government debt. I really regret I got a degree, my student loan debt is killing me, there are no consumer protections like with other debt. Student loan debt is the biggest scam, they worst debt you can ever get, its a huge mistake that students make in this country.
