RC: accepted to 3 schools, can't decide which to attend.

i've been accepted into pratt, tsinghua university (beijing) and catholic university, all are march2 or post professional march.

catholic seems to be out of the picture, so the real decision is between tsinghua and pratt, china or nyc...
both are seemingly very tight-knit, great locations, and affordable.

has anyone ever do the march at tsinghua, it's a brand new program for english speaking students, enrollment 20..

any help would be appreciated.

Well, seems like this is a really simple dilemma. Do you want to work overseas or in the states after graduation?

china will have tremendous opportunities. i spent a semester abroad in florence during undergrad and i've had a painful desire to go back since returning in '05. china isn't italy, but there's no doubting the experience will have a greater impact.

nyc is near my family and friends. no gf. catholic has a great program but imho, the dc setting won't compare to nyc or beijing.

i genuinely got accepted into pratt. i had never been to the campus, met anyone who worked or attended there, nor had any identifiable interaction prior to applying; i was accepted purely by the application materials. the program at tsinghua university was co-founded by one of my UG professors, who also wrote my recommendation (and hand-delivered it to admissions). the enrollment is 20, so i my acceptance feels somewhat undeserved.

ha no prob.

Actually for real Pratt would be fuckin kickass too. We should like come up with a game where you walk a plank with a blindfold and we throw things at you and if you fall off to the right you go to new york and if you fall off to the left you go to china.

if you do pro degree in china does it count in the states?

folks who graduate with m.arch here in tokyo have to do another m.arch in states when they return, which can be a bitch. they are here just for the experience.

...unless you already have a b.arch from the US, in which case, go have fun in China.

ah yes i see your happy degree is post pro m.arch. so idp and such is not an issue.

well, china is cool enough. a bit dirty in places, but some very interesting things going on. so is new york, actually.

part of the reason i came to japan about 16 years ago was because i didn't speak japanese and i thought it was the farthest i could get from everything i know without stepping off the earth. this is a neurosis of mine - i like to be in places where everything is new and bewildering. the reason i am saying this is not to boast however, but as warning. i have seen more than a few come here and hate their time here because nothing makes sense. my guess is that china would be similar. if you are into that kinda thing then china is going to be great place for the experience. if not then nyc is safer bet... speaking as person who has been expat for about 20 years i would go to china. nyc will always be there.
