Studio Hours

ArchiGuy

I am very curious to see what studio hours are like for architecture schools around the nation. I know that within the past couple of years schools have begun to crackdown on studio access due to liability reasons. It would be extremely helpful if I could get information on different schools and what students have access to around the clock (ie studios, printing labs, wood shop, etc.). Please be as descriptive as possible since we will be using this information to discuss recent issues at our school with faculty members and the department head.

I have been prompted to post this discussion because at our school (which will remain anonymous) we do not have proper access to the resources we need. On a good day our studios are open from 8am-2am. During long weekends the studio hours can become extremely limited and often closed completely.

We have also been shafted in terms of printing resources. Our entire school of roughly 5,000 undergraduate students has access to one printing lab that contains only 2 color printers, and 1 black & white plotter that is 10+ years old. The hours for this printing lab (on a good day) are 8am-10pm. Keep in mind that the queues for these printers are often so long that it can take 10-20 minutes to print a single color tabloid print. This lab has very limited access during the weekends and over long weekends.

I do not want this to turn into another controversial discussion about whether all-nighters are necessary. We would simply like to see the facts so that we have something to use when we talk to faculty members about a lack of resources.

Thanks!!!

Arch building and studios are open 24hrs/7days.

Computer lab open 24hrs/7days.

Printing lab varies between k days and weekends, but generally 8am-11pm, but open much later (1 or 2am at the very least) around the end of semester. Fairly well equipped with several different plotter and printer options, all up-to-date and high quality.

Woodshop open until 9pm, not sure if there are extended hours during finals weeks, but I wouldn't doubt it.

Our studios are open 24/7, as well as something like 10 or so computer labs, with plenty of printers, but only a few plotters that are usually broken. We have no access to color printers or plotters, though, and doing all of our color printing at the local print shops gets ridiculously expensive. Our wood shop is open from around 8:00 until maybe 9:00pm, (or 24/7 if you happen to know someone who works in the shop).

I can't even imagine how difficult it must be having limited hours for studio and computer access. :/

I should also mention that there are two computer labs. Both are equipped with both color and black/white printers.

our studios/labs are typically open from 7:30am-12am. If people want to pull an all nighter at school, there is a sign in sheet and at least 10 people must be on the list for it to be approved (it has to be approved several days before the all nighter to schedule adequate security)
the wood shop is only really open from 2pm-9pm M-S

If things haven't changed since I graduated, my school's studios are open 24-7. Printing facilities are run by volunteers who work 4 hours a week shifts so they have random hours but are mainly open when you need them. Printing volunteers have access to the printing facilities whenever they want since they have the code to the door. This means you want to know a volunteer. Everyone has their own computers, so there isn't a need to access the labs usually. Labs are only accessible by students (or their friends who ask them to get them in) that are taking a course in a lab.

As for the printing facilities equipment we had 1 Tabloid/Letter size b/w printer for each studio year, 3 color plotters, and 2 laser color printers.

Obviously the school didn't advocate all nighters and sometimes they would make students take out things like cots or sleeping bags because it isn't a "residential" building. Mainly they didn't harrass anyone, but maybe this has changed.

Anything less than 24/7 access is a travesty. I still use those skills to achieve deadlines when required. Priceless experience while we undertake competition work. The thrill of the chase.

Sleeping over is taking the piss. The studio not a doss house. Mind you I can't stand those colleagues who come to work then have their breakfast at the desk. Get ready at home, get up earlier, get organized.

our studios are open 24/7, but if you want to access them between 12 and 6 you have to sign in before midnight. We have a staffed printshop open 9 to 5 with four plotters that can print on anything with a 24 hour turnaround. The on demand printers are accessible 24/7, but may run out of paper the sunday before midterm and final crits. We have three shops for wood, metals, and technology, all of them are open 9-8 monday to saturday. You can check out tools for overnight use.

FYI, i think the "crackdown" has as much to do with saving on energy costs by not having to heat or cool the buildings if they aren't open two or three days a week.

Having read about how other schools are run, it seems like students in my school are fortunate. Our new school was designed to meet many of our needs... we have have shower facilities, comfy sofas to nap on, library areas designed with tatami mats where we could take naps and free taxi services to get home from 11pm to 5am.

Studios are 24/7 (as I know quite well from working/sleeping there for days at a time during midterms and finals), which also includes the printing/plotting room, which is never locked and has b&w and color printers and four color plotters. The shop is also open 24/7, including laser cutters, 3d printers, and cnc millers, but I think power is turned off to the machines that could cut off digits at certain late hours. DEFINITELY no taxi service though!

*4 CAD LABS... with only bw printers, but they are hooked up to print center.. so you can print from there

*woodshop 9am - 10pm-- everything free except the laser cutter that is coming, but will still be very cheap to use

*people bring their own couches to rest on, you can bring whatever u want to in your studio!... there are 8 studios and almost all studios have ping pong tables. There are showers but are rarely used

*My school is only an architecture school w/ about 400 students... so not many people... but we all love the free printing
