TU Delft vs. ETH Zurich

A.R.Ch

I'm applying for a semester abroad at both of these institutions, and would like to have some feedback on both.

Yes, I have searched the archives, but would like some pertinent opinions or personal experiences in regards to this particular situation. Thanks in advance for the help.

I also have the same question---but I recommend throwing in the architecture school at Mendrisio as another option---i think it is (or was, as of last year) becoming a hot place for some really good teachers.

Charisma-

That's actually my third choice, although the relative infancy of the program makes me hesitant about the consistency of the academics.

Hi ARCh and Charisma you are both right they are all excellent schools though TU Delf's architecture buidling recently burned down and they are now working in a temporary structure (that's what I read, you can maybe check it in their website or phone them) so I would go to for the other choices.

TU Delft students are no longer in tents: http://www.bk.tudelft.nl/live/pagina.jsp?id=67bc7065-ea8e-4ae5-8081-f5487113a472&lang=nl

I was there for a semester. I had a blast.

I'm really wondering what the atmosphere is like at each of these schools too. Does anyone happen to know where to find examples of student work for ETH and TU Delft...besides their ridiculously weak websites?

Yeah, yeah Holz.... We know that. But there are over 1000 students at D-Arch. Surely some of that success must be attributed to the shear volume of students passing through its illustrious halls. I imagine that like any school, there's the good studios as well as the bad.

As for student work beebtown, they do have a publication:
http://www.arch.ethz.ch/jahrbuch08/
My copy is on the way. I can let you know if it's worth purchasing, when it finally arrives here (hopefully soon).
There's also an ETH D-arch group on facebook. I imagine that'd be a pretty good way to contact students directly, though I haven't stooped to such levels quite yet :)

And for the record, I'm very interested in ETH myself, although I'm considering it for Masters... Especially now that the Chur Institute of Architecture is kaput.

thanks...and if/when you get the ETH pub in your hands let me know your impressions as I'll probably send for it too.

I visited to the school last year with my friend who went there. It is an interesting school, much in the same way that any mainly engineering school is with an architecture program. A lot of collaboration with other disciplines, and all the better for it. The school is situated on a hill above Zurich, and the students are somewhat shunned from the city. Zurich is also a very strange city, and you really have to know where to go to have a good time, as most everything is closed ALL the time. Zurich really does keep bank hours. As Holz said, it does flaunt the who's who od architecture, and for good reason, they have a great energy there. As for TU Delft, I don't have any experience with it.

So I finally got the ETH Yearbook a couple days ago. It's a nice sized document, with both German and English text.

I haven't had the opportunity to really dig into it yet, but my initial impression is that it's quite staid and boring looking (much like the school's website).
Coming from my current undergrad school where the image and presentation is stressed, I found very little that really catches the eye. Don't expect an exhibition catalogue like the ones from Columbia, AA, Bartlett, Sci-Arc, Penn, etc.
This one is all black and white, small photos, printed on regular paper, with lots of unimpressive drawings.

And quite frankly, I think it's great! I'm so bloody sick of schools that are so divorced from the world of physical craft and construction. ETH definitely has their own stance on architecture, and I for one am quite intrigued by it.
