Columbia's second language requirement

switch

Hello I was wondering if anyone knew how strictly they enforced this? How do they test/decide if you are fluent enough in the language to qualify?

I am learning French at the moment, but not sure if I would be good enough to satisfy the requirement come next year's application deadlines.

I tried contacting the school, but it seems that they (and other grad schools) are notoriously bad at answering prospective student's inquiries.

If anyone knows anything I'd be curious to hear. Thanks!

Hey switch I'll be applying next year as well, but I have not heard of a second language requirement, what program will you be applying to?

SamSam, I just went to the site and could not find the page I had been thinking about. In fact, I couldn't find any page listing pre-requisites.

I will be applying to the MArch I.

Maybe it doesn't exist anymore. I'm guessing the pre-reqs are calculus, physics and architectural history still. Seems strange that that information isn't readily visible on the website.

That second language requirement is only for the PhD program. For March, or AAD, etc, you do not need that.

columbia prereqs are 2 semesters of calc or one semester of physics + arch history (one survey, one modern, i think)

i think u got mix up with the foreign student requirement, they have the "english" as a second language requirement and need to pass the ESL test "english as second language"

"Applicants are required to complete the following course work: one term of studio in the visual arts (drawing, painting, or sculpture). In addition, a reading knowledge of a modern foreign language and a survey course in architectural history are required."

http://www.arch.columbia.edu/gsap/44512

You'll find that little jewel in the "Programs --> Architecture --> About --> Admissions --> Academic Preparation" section (sorry there isn't a clearer way to guide you to it).

Strangely, this is the only mention of the foreign language requirement, so maybe they've scrapped it and failed to edit this section of their webpage.

I have no idea how/if they follow-up on this requirement.
