As educators of conscience, we have been unable to stand by and watch in silence Israel’s indiscriminate assault on the Gaza Strip and its educational institutions.
Accordingly, in response to the call by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel
For the first time, American university professors have initiated an academic boycott, a tool previously used by academics in Britain.
The U.S. Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel, launched last week, enumerates five goals. These include: “Refraining from participation in any form of academic and cultural cooperation, collaboration or joint projects with Israeli institutions that do not vocally oppose Israeli state policies against Palestine,” “promoting divestment and disinvestment from Israel by international academic institutions,” and “supporting Palestinian academic and cultural institutions directly without requiring them to partner with Israeli counterparts as an explicit or implicit condition for such support.”
news: Hamas to take Israel to court over Gaza attack
Hamas, democratically elected representatives of the Palestinian people, are winding up to take Israel to “all international courts”.
I’m sure the fact that the Arab League achieved a forum
sans Egypt and Saudi Arabia — back in mid-January — was an important turning point for the Middle East.
The fact that the Corporations
1. illegally invaded Iraq and Afghanistan and reduced those two states to rubble,
2. have been illegally bombing Pakistan and
3. have been threatening to bomb Iran every five minutes, when Iran has been bending over backwards to comply with international law,
has surely significantly mobilized the region to look for ways to stem the momentum of defense industry profiteering.
The fact that the global economic infrastructure is in the process of undergoing a major overhaul has probably also made this seem like a propitious moment to all those putting their shoulders behind this wheel.
It’s the Warmongers vs. the Peacemakers. That’s what this has come down to.
i am not sure about blowback, but i think that this serves to point out it's both their interests to perpetuate this "war." reasonable people on both sides need to acknowledge this fact, and fix the problem.
i think it will take a world wide intervention to force them into reconciliation. would really be moving to see the Israeli politicos cry for the world to see for their self serving genocidal acts as well as a end to irrational martyrdom.
i don't think a flat out boycott of israel is justified... they did bad stuff but not really that bad considering their situation. they just had a tough decision to make. and it didn't work out so well.
ya to choose non violence IS a 'tough decision' (sic)
while we may not like what the occupied people do they are in their full right to resist the injustice done to them, just as any people would under such brutal systematic genocidal apartheid conditions. So reacting with overwhelming force rather than a open hand will only lead to more of the same. pointless
The Israeli government says it will impose sanctions on Israel-based employees of the Al Jazeera television network in response to closure last month of the Israeli trade office in Qatar, which hosts and funds the network. Qatar closed the office in opposition to Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip. Haaretz reports Israel will not renew the visas of Al Jazeera’s non-Israeli employees or grant visas to new employees. Station representatives will not be allowed into briefings or press conferences. The Israeli government has also instructed Knesset members and ministers not to grant interviews or otherwise cooperate with the station. Al Jazeera was the only television network with reporters inside Gaza during Israel’s twenty-two-day assault
yet another reason to learn them a lesson in compassion and freedom of the rights of individual and press...
oh i get it, only partner w/ israeli academic institutions that come out against the israeli government and lose all funding. good luck with that. it's win win win for those students. clowns.
no, by divestment, i don't think that the opposite propose is the stated goal. divestment means taking money away and let those institutions that don't have funding and find it elsewhere. how is this any different than how we dealt with apartheid?
For people who question the affects of an Israeli divestment campaign, it's important to note that there are no illusions about the goals of divestment. There is no claim that divestment will cripple funding for Israel and it's industry. The purpose of the campaign is more to raise awareness about the atrocities being committed by Israel and encourage a greater number of people to join the cause against apartheid, aggression, occupation, and injustice. There is so much public intimidation for pro-Palestinian voices (ie, accusations of anti-semitism or being labeled supporters of "terrorism") that a public rejection Israel's policies is the only way Israeli propaganda can be countered.
And, Ryan..."they did bad stuff but not really that bad" is the understatement of the century. When a country violates international law & the Geneva Conventions, institutes a policy of segregation and apartheid, steals land and expands their illegal empire, violently occupies a people, regularly commits targeted political assassinations, establishes a racist and exclusionary government body, and regularly commits acts of aggression and genocide against innocent civilians...that is when "they did bad stuff" starts to sound more than a bit ignorant, especially considering the atrocities committed in Gaza. No offense, but you may want to read a few books that are not reeking of Israeli propaganda.
Seriously. U.S. occupying Iraq and Afghanistan (the former under false and illegal pretenses), both half a world away, killing in the process thousand times more civilians than Israel ever has. So I guess the less-hypocritical path is to boycott ourselves, right?

I was talking about Israel. But you are right, the USA has modeled many of their illegal international policies and actions on Israel's policies and are complicit in both supporting Israel's violations as well as committing their very own. Very right you are, Holz and Trip...

how do you boycott israel?
so you're going to stop buying flowers, vegetables, fertilizers, textiles, chemicals and diamonds harvested/manufactured in israel?
most of that doesn't make it over here.
Ryan, you should actually learn about the situation first.
