Our class is having a project on Paul Rudolph's umbrella house. The project is about reconstructing the umbrella using a material other the wood.. a light weight material... i tried aluminum called Alucobond... my professor didn't buy it. any suggestions???? thanks
Let's work through this, because by throwing out a request for suggestions you're asking us to do your studio work for you. Tell us what your professor didn't like about Alucobond, or in your own words why Alucobond is not appropriate.
Because it is a sandwich material, it will have much larger dimensions
than the original umbrella. also no one in my class will investigate in aluminum to aluminum connections.
you may look at pugh+scarpa's solar umbrella house... larry scarpa grew up in florida and his house in california is a riff on rudolph's... he used solar panels and in one vertical area he actually used the bristles from push brooms...
Puddles, I'll thank you to leave to knee-jerk smart-assity to myself, please and thank you. Thanks.
OP - what kind of studio is this for? Are you supposed to be doing materials/systems research? Did you just google and come up withe Alucobond? WHY isn't your professor *quotey fingers* buying it?

Alucobond is a (somewhat structural) panel where aluminum sandwiches insulation and LB makes a pretty tough hall monitor.
More info?

i thought about canvas or solar panels but they are too common...plastic or fiberglass????
i suggest a large sheet of fruit roll-ups. maybe sprinkle some sugar on top if you want to be fancy about it
So I'm not really that familiar with the Umbrella House, but from what I can figure out it was built with wood: dimensional sizes, linear format.
What kind of canvas, solar panels, or fiberglass come in dimensional linear sizes?
Or is the goal to recreate the function of the umbrella, not the structure? In which case the form of the material might not matter...
We really do need more info on what the goal of the project is.

The core of alucobond is : Low density polyethylene not insulation.
How about suspended globules of low-density cholesterol?
any galv. cold-formed metal framing that might work? ...lots of profiles available... I suppose paintable...
^ One of those two should get you an "A - flippin' PLUS!"
It was marketed as "insulation" in the 90s
