International Schools of Architecture

nothing_is_everything

Although we can argue their validity on many levels, the US has several tools for assessing the quality of an architectural educational at particular institutions. We can consult a host of rating scales, the schools' own website, and forums like Archinect for elaborate detail on a specific program. But what happens when we try to find similar information for programs abroad and the information simply isn't there?

Do you know if there is some type of rating....or way to critically gauge the academics at an architectural school overseas?

best is relative to your interests,,

in the u.s,, some ppl think harvard is the best,
others think sci-arc is better,

but others think the rural studio is kick ass,,

your question should be, what fits ME best...

While it does not demonstrate which school is the best, it does demonstrate those architecture programs that have been assessed by RIBA.

As well, NAAB does the same for US programs

but in the usa certain students often find that the curriculum and focus of a second-tier program fits their personal interests much closer than that of a first-tier program... but the second-tier program unfortunately doesn't attract students of a high-enough intellectual caliber to keep things at a high-level, so the students go to the first-tier schools and are around equally bright people but are miserable because of the boring curriculum.

I have a strong interest in pushing conceptual design. I want to find a program that focuses on architectural design theory, and is less focused on practicality. I am also interested in small scale urban interventions.

Does anyone know, outside the USA, where a program like this might exist.

One school that really caught my interest this year was the University of Belgrade's new international Arch program, which offers some interesting elective studios (http://www.arh.bg.ac.yu/code/navigate.asp?Id=2381)

and also Berlage! spectacular lectures, great team.

someone was also chatting w/ me the other day about this program http://www.isd.usc.edu.tw/ at Taiwan, Shih-Chien University - does anyone have any experience w/ that uni?

As far I EU goes, I was extremely impressed by the intellectual rigor Switzerland's ETH Zurich from my experience with the students which seems to be the "Havard" of EU as far as prestige goes. (http://www.arch.ethz.ch/darch/index.php?lang=en)

openeye - I would highly recommend you look at these 3 programs overseas for conceptual design:

Germany's Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste
http://www.staedelschule.de/architecture/
(Ben van Berkel, Daniel Birnbaum)

Austria's University of Applied Arts Vienna
http://www.dieangewandte.at/architecture/
Greg Lynn Studio, Zaha Hadid studio...

Barcelona' IAAC

So is that € 1580 full time student fee (per semester) TUITION?!?

Axelle, (or anyone else) do you happen to know of any good international M.Arch I programs around that price? Or any halfway decent ones for that matter? And on this list if possible http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/FSLookupServlet;jsessionid=0001GP61v-JB-PX2GqNiXrHhdEq:11efeuovj ?

openeye- I am not aware of any English language masters programs in SA. You could research the São Paulo's international architecture biennale, as I'm sure they had some SA university presentations/student projects

lisaletostak: Switzerland's ETH's current rate is 580 CHF (520 USD)/semester, there is not usually tuition in Germany (not in all cases, some english language programs such as Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste have charged tuition) as well as Sweden, Finland, Norway and this applies to internationals. I've found international tuition rates in UK and NL make them somewhat comparable to American schools.

WOW. So they're really hard to get into then right? Do you know of any sites with information about European or International Architecture programs? (I will of course google/look at the colleges site's you mentioned and others too). I am looking for an M.Arch I program though so would like to find one place where I can find just these programs.

Thank you for the info! I knew the UK's tuition prices but I had no idea international student tuition in the EU could be so low!!

Sorry, forgot to mention I'm only interested in English language programs. Well I'm only qualified for English language programs anyway.
