I'm helping out one of our teams for the day. They have a large open gym like space (60'x70') with gable steel roof trusses. The peak of the roof is 39' and the bottom of the trusses are around 23' AFF. There are two rows of large clearstory windows on the north and south walls. They are about 8' tall and run almost the entire length of the 70' dimension. So, you can imagine it's a pretty nice open space that will get some great natural light. The hope (and my responsibility for the day) is to find a material that will help diffuse the light. It can't be glass (to heavy and expensive). Some research already done dug up this[/rul] and [url=http://www.newmatusa.com/index2.html]this stuff. It can be fabric or screen. I realize this is a very vague request but it's developing as the research moves along.
I should add this is an existing building we are renovating.
dml. That is certainly one alternative. But for now we are looking for a material that might simply hangs either infront of the windows or just below the windows and acts as a ceiling plane.
if you are retro-fitting an existing glass wall/roof, you might add their Okalux or Okagel material to the inner surface and then use a light-weight acrylic sheet to hold it in place.

Why not just make the clerestory windows frosted or fritted rather than add another component?
yikes. here's the links again.

Does anyone know the "layered fiber mesh" material used by Obra Architects at PS1 in '06?
Delstar Technologies Inc., polyethylene mesh
ETFE film instead of the window glazing. don't use kalwall.
Why not Kalwall? I was just looking at it a few minutes ago.
kalwall is ugly! I'd think your office would have a moratorium against using such awful looking materials.
if budget isn't an issue, look at the pilkinton channel glass and their nanogel insulation- without the nanogel, it's almost affordable.
at a minimum, all renovated gyms should be this good…
that is a really nice gym holz.
what/where/who?
thanks TK. yeah, moratorium maybe... thought the materials library is big enough that it's bound to have some nasty stuff hidden away somewhere..
glass is definitely too expensive and heavy for what this needs to be... think interior application think simple/minimal.
Here's my crib sheet thus far (moratoriums aside)

I was hoping you'd throw down some beautiful images, holz... thanks.
what, that's all i'm good for? i feel so used...
holz, i meant no disrespect.
a few others (i don't have time for pics)
auer + weber, sporthalle in ulm
dorte mandrup sport hall
and here
i was just kidding, i don't mind at all.
check out foiltecna for the ETFE film - dupont doesn't seem to sell it.
holz- as always, you have the best pics
That stuff looks cool, tk. Just ordered some samples.
We have atleast one project in the office using that Kalwall stuff, tk. design discussion here.

like all the images, but surely the last one is lacking that elusive light-diffusing material, no?
Thanks for all of the insight/suggestions, folks.
My hope is to explore more 'low tech' solutions today, a la cheap(er) alternatives.
I'll try and post my updated crib sheet during lunch.
