What about MArch at Rice?

franciscoalarcon

Hello guys,

I opened before a topic talking about the MArch in Berkeley. Now I would like to talk about another great School and its MArch.

What do you know about Rice University and the architecture programs? It is listed in the top universities in architecture. The rate of admission at their MArch program is 20%.

What else?

Its actually lower than that...they accepted 12 from 300 last year.

It is small, and in one of the nicest areas of Houston...meaning what is bad about Houston is pretty much negated by the location.

I am just getting done with my first semester and will say it is quite intense.

Resources are lacking a bit, but that seems to go with the smaller school. The professors I have had are all top notch and the overall focus is on studio, but you will find a very wide range of influences and opportunities.

Let me know if you want more specific information.

How is the diversity there?

Actually I am from Spain.

Its good, depending on how you are looking at it. There is a large amount of international students from last year - 6 of 24 ( 3 spanish speakers from Mexico (2), Guatemala(1)) while in my class I believe there is none - though we are paired with the option I's from last year. As a whole though, I would say it is quite diverse. Especially considering how small the school is.

My friend just started there at Rice, too. He's semi international. Born in Thailand, grew up over here. Lots of good work comes out of rice, but like jasoncross said, admissions are tight.

Ah, North. Good guy, great work.

Yes, there is one in my class from Bulgaria and another from Pakistan (I know it's not europe...but it is not the western hemisphere).

I know there are many others from europe and elsewhere within the school...but I don't know any numbers that I could give you. My suggestion would be to contact the school itself for more information...I am sure they will give you a better answer in regards to the whole school.

Oh, and my GRE was a mere 1170 I believe...portfolio. portfolio. portfolio...a nice recommendation or two wouldn't hurt.

Goodluck!

I ran into North this weekend at TTU Graduation. I'd have to say great guy, great work, but maybe I'm a bit partial.

Oh, and my GRE was a mere 1170 I believe...portfolio. portfolio. portfolio...a nice recommendation or two wouldn't hurt.

^That's gotta be the statement of the year. I swear, I don't know how many times I've seen people on here freaking out about the GRE scores and GPA. It's not like we're applying to Med school or Law school.

Rice is going through some turnover.

Lars Lerup (who does not necessarily have a day to day presence anyways) is leaving at the end of next year, and a several profs are rumored to be either leaving or taking sabbaticals.

As with any graduate school, research which profs you want to study with - and make sure that they will be there during your stay at that school (obviously, if you are there for 3.5 years a semester sabbatical does not really matter).

I have also heard that they are ending the "thesis" option for people in the 1.5 year program, if doing a thesis is important to you (it was a very valuable experience for me), then you should reconsider.

Please also remember that because of the small class sizes, the class composition and attitude varies drastically year to year.

I may be wrong about not allowing thesis for 1.5 year students. Please verify for yourself if it is important to you.

Rice is EXTREMELY hard to get into, however, that shouldn't deter you from applying. Don't apply there exclusively though - that is really limiting your options. I got into Rice and several good schools but got rejected from several good schools as well - play the odds, and you'll be fine - keep your options open.
