let's talk porn

ronjeremy

The other day there was a great Stephen Colbert report on a woman that teaches other women to pole dance. The joke is that she thought she was the Susan B. Anthony of the new feminism. In days in which sex tapes can make a couple a lot of money and for celebrities it can turn out to be a hell of a good career maker (Paris etc...), is she correct? I wanted to focus it on the women, since I am a man and am not sure how to think about all this. It was hilarious when the guy sitting at the Hustler club, was like "yeah I think it is great that they feel is empowering, it helps us not feel like pigs".

Porn is one of the few industries were women make more WAY more than men (although a lot of porn is produced by frat-boys). Is slutty the new black? Is that fine and a normal evolution of the 'sex revolution' (women taking control of their sexuality); or are we losing something when both men and women lose all types of sexual mores? Do women lose something particularly when they are expected to act, dress, and behave in a certain way? Or as am I interpreting all this wrongly?

I saw an interview with a girl who had an online site where she wasnt even getting naked (just skimpy underwear, etc...)

Anyways, she was pulling in $10,000 a month...not bad

I have a friend who is a porn star here in LA. She has her own Playboy show...gets to travel all over the world. Has a nice house, nice car, loves her job. Very down to earth girl

...tumbleweed... you are probably kidding, but does the objectification not bother you? I am very happy that she is able to pull that type of money, but it all is dependent on her boobs being perky, isn't it? What about her as mind that probably could contribute something greater than spreads in Playboy.
Maybe that statement is too old fashioned?

The best way I have found to barbeque corn is to soak the ears in water with the husks on for 15 minutes. Then open up the husks just enough to pour melted butter down the ears. Place over medium fire until first two or three outer layers of the husk are burnt. They are done.

The problem has always been that the objectification of women is demeaning. This is something I've never entirely understood. I think women generally find it hard to understand why men or how men are so obsessed with physical appearance; why appearance, in isolation, can be so powerful. Personally, I admit to being attracted to women's appearances. But that doesn't mean I'm not eaqually, or even more, interested in them as people. The problem with porn, for me, is its banality. Why it can't be a mind-fuck as well is a mystery to me...

the reference to merry-genital-stroking-do-gooders-aka-Thread--Centralinos makes so much sense in this thread.

I was just looking for the house Robert Oshatz designed for Barbie Benton in Colorado.....so Tumbles might get an idea as to how much pole dancing pays. However he has recently updated his web site and it is no longer there. Think Barbie and her developer Husband were calling it splits....and the new owner probably had written into the contract....NO PICTURES!

women make more than men? even in the gay porn industry?

Jul 18, 07 11:03 pm  ·

architechnophilia, even in the web porn (is it different from sex?) drives innovation. They need better systems to deliver their stuff so faster movie downloads, picture systems, etc...

Travis, I think if you were to take the porn industry as a whole that would still be true. If you separate gay sex I am sure that lesbian performers make a hell of a lot more than gay men, but do not quote me. Or quote me I don't care.

Brainy porn, is that, like, in a classroom or something?

yes garpike, maybe the right way to say it is that they get paid more for doing the same 'job', which in this case is, well... fucking. The owners and producers, thus the ones that make the real bucks, are still mostly men.

oh, so now there's a glass ceiling for gay men even in the porn industry. great.

Actually alot of women are producing too. Clubjenna is one of the biggest names in the business, and last I checked Jenna had a huge chunk of Vivid shares. Alot of these girls basically manage their own setup, and the internet has been integral to that. Danni Ashe is also one of the biggest names in the industry, and they continue to make more.

Frankly, i don't find porn demeaining towards women, when your the guy jacking off by himself in front of a computer in a dark room at 3 in the morning, who's the bitch then? You are totally her digital bitch and she's getting all the ego reinforcing attention she could ask for. But that's just how i see it.

i agree. but porn is getting boring. it isnt like what it used to be. it got way modern, so simple and just sex on the go.

a potential problem with porn that i've observed, to respond to ronjeremy's first query, is that men have a compartmentalization problem: the more porn they see, the greater their problem separating those fantasy women in fantasy conditions from the women they might encounter in their daily life.

a little exposure here and there is probably not an issue - healthy distraction, women like it too, blah blah - but i've seen men become so acclimated to thinking about women relative to their porn exposure that every woman then becomes potential for ogling, assessment, judgment, pursuit, etc. this is where 'objectification' of women is too safe and clean a term: i think there is a real danger when that objectification is so thoroughly a de-personalization of the women these men encounter.

the women who choose to participate in porn are probably in a better power position than those who are more oblivious to it and don't know the implications of their encounters with men who are overexposed.

if that makes any sense at all.

porn makes me depressed.

it only gets people depressed if you let it get to you.it can be funny sometimes even if it is always depressing. porn is a cure for boredom just like sex and masturbation.

I had a studio critic at grad school who once caught a bunch of us looking at El Croquis. He took it away and said something like "Now when you're looking at this stuff, don't just stare at the images uncritically like it's porn: 'Oh, wow, check that out', You've got to constantly ask yourselves 'why?', 'why does it work, why does it look good?'"

I still think it's a pretty good metaphor.

People forget the brain is the biggest erogenous zone. -Jackie Treehorn

I think the Beatiz Colomina essay in Sexuality and Space about the power of the gaze in Adolf Loos' and Mark Wigley's essay, Untitled: The Housing of Gender in the same book are the best things I've read on the subject in relation to architecture.

I'd like to add more to this later, but I've got to get back to work unfortunately. I think this is a really interesting topic though.

one of my clents is a porn lawyer; he helps determine what is and isnt legal. Anyways, I asked him today how the porn industry circumnavigates the whole prostitution / getting paid to preform sex acts thing. Apparently the 1st amendment protects the industry under free speech laws; as long as the porn actors and actresses are working as 'actors' then it is a form of movie making / art and is legal.

So....the next time you are with a hooker, film it, and you should be fine.

He was also telling me about clients that he has that are making $6 million a month with porn web sites
