Bartlett interview experience?

oldenvirginia

I have an interview with the Batlett, UK in a few weeks. Does anyone have any experience interviewing with them? Specifically for the Dip Arch programme.

The kind of info I'm looking for is: what kind of questions did you get, was it friendly and laid back or rigorous and demanding? etc. etc.

Thanks if you can help.

Hi,
I am doing my diploma in september. I wish i had someone to answer my questions so i thought i would post!

In your interview the focus will mainly be on where you stand on future architectural discourse. This is very important. Generally mine was quite relaxed but you will need to be convincing in quite a short amount of time. They may also ask the normal additional questions such as why you want to go, have you seen the show, what your weaknesses are etc.

Maybe thats a help i dont know. If you have any other questions just ask!

phat - thanks for the response. I do have a few more questions...

Could you elaborate on what you mean by where I stand on future arch. discourse? Do you mean in the profession or personally? What kind of topic? How detailed a view do they expect?

You say it was very important - did they linger long on the topic? What sort of questions did they ask?

Also, did you spend long going over your portfolio?

Thanks so much.. now I'm rather nervous!

they're more interested in your work than anything else - your talent and ability to work your ass off than anything else. don't try bull shitting too much. if its neil thats interviewing you, expect the unexpected. if its bob, he's more straightforward.

the worst part of the bartlett is not the entrance interview, but the unit interviews that you will through on your send day there.

someone email me about the unit interviews...

they're more intense, as the tutors will be fighting for the talent hardworking students... just be prepared to sell yourself in the interview. some tutors are nice, friendly, etc... others are arrogant fucks. avoid the latter.

if your portfolio isn;t great or they don;'t think its that great, than try to let them know that you're willing to work your ass off.

don't be too nervous, it'll be lots of ups and down... just work hard and you'll be fine. you'll have a love/hate relationship with the bartlett, most probably.

Unit interviews? I will be starting my diploma at the Bartlett this fall, and I have not heard of these. In my undergraduate school we used a ballot system.

Anyway, can anyone elaborate on what is expected at the interviews? Do you have to bring your portfolio to support the discussion, etc?

Thanks.

well wishes to all you future Bartlett folk. As was stated, dont BS much, just be straightforward, and do offer you views/agenda. This will help them to see how you truly feel about the profession/architecture.

As for the unit interviews, as I experienced them (being a graduate student, not a dip student)the tutors do seek bright hard working students with a passion for what they do. Usually the creme de la creme will have their pick of the studio they wish because those instructors do want a driving force in their studio. Hence, if you feel strongly about something, and it coincides with your future prof./studio, they dont be shy about letting them know.

Again, best wishes mates. I know you will all do well and make the school a thriving place that I remember so well. Who knows I may come over the pond to visit, and sit in on your reviews.

Cheers
