The Balkanization of America

new hampshire actually has the highest percentage of people of both french and french canadian descent, making them the largest "ethnic" group other thank old line yankees in the state (probably because of all the folks who came down to work in the mills), according to wikipedia, whose facts i never question. so vermont, new hampshire and michigan should be able to co-exist quite peaceably as part of the francodescended world.

i'm not sure how the right to revolution would hold up with uncle sam (who is actually based on a real guy from new hampshire, also according to wikipedia, so we get to keep him when we leave i hope) as it is rarely invoked and even more rarely used in court. the last i heard of it being considered was when some protesters were arrested when rep. bradley refused to meet with them recently. other than that, a few years back the us supreme court refused to hear new hampshire's case which sought to settle the border dispute between new hampshire and maine with regard to the portsmouth naval shipyard, which is tentatively in maine. as a result, some guy from newmarket or somewhere got in a small boat with some buddies, called themselves a militia, "invaded" seavey island where the shipyard is located, and raised the new hampshire flag on an abandoned fort, saying that the government had failed its duties and they were revolting. he also called on then-gov. jeanne shaheen to declare war on maine as commander-in-chief of the nh national guard.

texas - has a unique situation - it can actually seceed if it feels like & the feds don't have squat to say about it (unless pork projects, etc are doling out) ......... no civil war potential there. it can also split into several individual states to up its overall representation if it stays in the union. all of this because when it joined the United States - it was the independent Republic of Texas. Suggested read - Michener's Texas - an insiteful romp across texas history. It was suggested by A TEXAN.

Of course - none of this will ever come to pass
1) texans sort of look at themselves as 'there is TEXAS, and then there is the rest of the Universe'
2) where else can you carry a shotgun in your car/pickup truck/on the street - and shoot a trespasser
3) it would kill high school football as the state pastime, where graduation at the age of 23 or so can be highly desireable. They have the biggest sophomores (peter pans) ANYWHERE.
4) and cheerleading as a girls coming of age - highest attainment
4) Tom DeLay
5) Crawford & GWB
6) enron

But Austinia would be a great state by itself - not to have ever been there - but because of the Austin folks who's paths I have crossed.

And then - there is the "planet houston" potential.

California really should be two states - breaking off somewhere just south of SLO. Southern Cal - should assimilate baja ca.

Michigan really is three places - western (lake michigan side), eastern (the huron / erie side) & the upper pen.

we could do to ourselves - what we insist on doing to the rest of the developing world - invent or inflict 'democracy', instead of 'interested parties' gerrymandering into red dominant & diluted blue secessionistas. And we need it.

yeah but i have a few friends in michigan who call themselves "french canadians." while they don't speak any french, they all have french last names, have a tendancy to be catholic and come from large families, and are big red wings fans. people of this cut are actually decended from the first french settlers who founded detroit. oh, and don't forget detroit's "french palimpsest"

I'm home for the weekend just went to the new Ben & Jerry's downtown in Manchester, where I happened to see large buckets labeled Vermonster. unfortunately I found no frappes available, and am now advocating annexation of vermont on a pro-frappe expansionist platform

Yep it's true that my screen name comes from the Ben and Jerry's sundae. 20 scoops. Saw a friend of mine eat one by himself once on a dare. It was disgusting. Are "frappes" descended from French settlers as well?

That's a great story about the Militiamen. How did it end?

I think cumpulsory voting would be a good idea for this country. Australia has it...

at least four states (vermont, texas, california, and hawaii) were once "independent" countries. although only hawaii did it for very long. texas was only ever recognized by france and their ambassador went home after a month in a snit after some pigs ate the swiss chard in his garden or something like that

oh, and we might freeze in the winters...but i bet y'all can't take our summers...and our summer lasts about nine months longer than your winter

but let's be friends...we texans are buying all michigan's gas-guzzling road-hog pickup trucks, after all, and we might find ourselves lining up against each other along the lines of "ford" and "chevy" by the time we get to memphis

VMster -- i got my b.arch so i'm not so cognizant about the master's program...but 8 austin / SOA tips:

1. south austin: we're all here 'cause we're not all there.
2. get a part-time job if you can, everyone's hiring.
3. wheatsville co-op, baby.
4. if it looks like it's trying not to be trendy, it probably is. so while you're in south austin, stay off the trendy part of south congress unless you want to buy a pair of real cowboy boots at allen's or unless you like to buy yarn. stay AWAY from guero's. and south congress cafe, their owner is a serial building/zoning code violator. you don't want to support that.
5. la reyna and la mexicana on south 1st. el habanero on w oltorf. el flaco, el borrego de oro, and garibaldi's on far south congress. all the mexican a south austinite needs to know.
6. do not park illegally at UT...those cops have less to do than the montpelier VT PD. you will get a ticket.
7. when they finally finish the LBJ redo, go there at like 1.30 in the morning when all the students are out of town. awesome view.
8. you may not think you care about football, but you really do.

bonne chance

oh, and no: you cannot ski in TX
and yes: marfa is overrated as i mentioned earlier today
and it too smells like cowshit

Huh, has anyone heard about how Alberta wants to suceed from Canada? There are also quite a few groups up north of the border that think Canada should just become part of the USA.

From my travels I think east and west Canada have less in common with each other than Texas and Michigan or California and New England.

A Michiganstan country does intrigue me but the capital surely couldn't be in Michigan. According to the Onion, Detroit was burned down for the insurance money.

the interesting thing about texas back then was that present-day bexar county encompassed almost half of what is now new mexico and, as you can see, the panhandle of oklahoma and colorado all the way up to denver

today bexar county is just the city of san antonio and a couple of suburbs

I would like to nominate for president of Michiganistan...

TED NUGENT (Detroit)

And for vice president...

STEVEN SEGAL (Lansing), BOB SEGAR (Detroit), or TOM SELLECK (Detroit)

Also, I think a giant wall would be the solution to keep those people from Ohio out. We will leave the wall open at all major roadways, since people from Ohio can't drive anyway. I'm not sure if people from Indiana can drive, so to be on the safe side, no openings in that part of the wall! Also, once the militia conquers Canada, we will hold a monopoly on ice fishing, cheap beer and non-Russian hockey players.

now that the tigers are winning again, magnum p.i. can finally end his hawaii exodus and come home...it's just like 1984 all over again. even the mustaches are back.

i think that there's actually a pretty impressive list of native michiganders out there who have left and achieved success elsewhere...although my saturday afternoon brain is too groggy to recall most of them. madonna is an obvious one. architecturally, many of you might be surprised to learn that john lautner (of southern california fame) was actually a native of michigan's upper peninsula. anybody know of any others off the top of their heads?

Ted Nuget also has an illegitimate son in Dover, NH, so I foresee strong international ties between Ver... and Michiganistan... perhaps we could be charter members of some sort of American Union, or at least share a combined military force to combat our respective southern neighbors, Ohio and Massachusetts

I found this on Wikipedia...

In the December 15, 1990 issue of the Detroit Free Press Magazine, Nugent was quoted as saying that 30 days before his draft board physical, he stopped all forms of personal hygiene. The last 10 days, he ingested nothing but Vienna sausages and Pepsi; and a week before his physical, he stopped using bathrooms altogether, virtually living inside pants caked with his own excrement, stained by his urine. That spectacle won Nugent a deferment, he says. "... but if I would have gone over there, I'd have been killed, or I'd have killed, or I'd killed all the hippies in the foxholes...I would have killed everybody." In a 2006 interview published in the Online Independent UK, Nugent denies ever saying (or doing) that. According to Nugent, he enrolled at Oakland Community College and took a student deferment. [1]
