weird scholarships, can anybody give me an advice?

Catinca

hi guys, i've seen there  are quite a lot of discussions related to the gsd, so maybe one of you could give me an advice. I am an incoming international student for the MLAII at the GSD and I have to make a tough decision regarding a scholarship. Although I was selected for a good scholarship from my home country, the contract requires me to get at least B+ grades in average and to be one of the top 35% students. They are allowed to cancel the scholarship if you do and ask back for the money they gave you already + an extra 50% as a sanction. As I never studied in the US, I cannot compare my capacities with other students and cannot know right now if I could have excellent result, especially in a school that is very highly ranked. The financial risks seem a little bit too high..

So, please tell me, is it common also for US scholarships to have similar conditions? Unfortunately I have to take a quick decision as school starts pretty soon and it is still not clear to me if there are opportunities for other scholarships, competitions or student aids during the academic year.

Most US scholarships won't ask you to pay back the money, they will just quit giving it to you if you don't meet standards.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't B+ the standard grade for everyone as long as you do the work? Grade inflation appears to be quite rampant in this field (I'm not sure about landscape architecture specifically, but at Harvard in general, yes). I'd wager you'll have more to worry about with your elective classes.

thank you guys. nagooyen, your comment is very helpful. we have a different grading system and I know from experience that grading systems have surprising variation from country to country, so I didn't really know what to expect.

And morgan..you have to be Romanian in order to get this scholarship, judging by your name I guess it's not the case.

B+ should be easy to maintain, top 35% more or less could be done.

but the penalties sound pretty drastic though, almost like extortion. a 50% penalty is quite high,

i say take the scholarship and work hard to maintain that b+

there are also electives you can take to allow you to raise your overall gpa..
