Declare your manifesto

Wilma Buttfit

Perhaps you know Bruce Mau's manifesto, perhaps you just heard of it. I think we should start manifesting right here, right now.

1. Open a book and it will in turn open you. The point of education is not to get smarter but to reduce ignorance.

2. Take today off. You'll probably get more done this way anyways.

(Ok to be in draft form. It is an incomplete manifesto. For growth.)

3. Just say ok. Ok can be the best sentence you can speak. It makes everything ok.

This is why it is a good word. It means yes now but no later and you will understand someday.

4. Avoid negativity. You don't want that stuff all over you. If you are accidentally exposed to it, seek refuge. Perhaps in a stairwell.

Don't open Autocad. Keep it open. Opening and closing it all the time shortens telemeres. Or something.

That's not a manifesto...

My current manifesto summed up pretty well by Michael Pollan in this excellent interview on Econ Talk:

Michael Pollan: Yeah. Well, the line--one of the things you learn is the line between profundity and banality is very fine--

Russ Roberts: It sure is--

Michael Pollan: And, our brains are tuned for novelty, you know? We are--you know--with good reason. It was very adaptive to notice new things in the environment, and take familiar things for granted. And one of the things that happens on psychedelics--and this can happen through meditation, too--is a deep appreciation of the familiar. You know, of the woman you've been in a relationship with for, you know, 30 years. Of your children, the wonder of having children. And the wonder of love. And, so, I work very hard in the book to describe that, and kind of--

Russ Roberts: you do a great job--

Michael Pollan: and finally I conclude that, you know: Yes, these are platitudes: that love is the most important thing. But what is a platitude? It's a truth from which all the emotion has been drained. And you can re-saturate that dried husk, in a way. And psychedelics can help you do it. And suddenly you feel it with that full force. And it's a wonderful thing when it happens.

So: truth. I'm interested in truths.

i write the manifestos (to be sung to "i write the songs"

i have been around forever
and i penned the very first manifest-o
sure there may have been others
but undoubtedly mine is the best-o.

i decreed those passionate convictions
and condemned the decadent bourgeiousie
so when you think manifesto
i am the best
so think of me.

i write the manifests that make the architect geeks weep
i write the manifests that put a normal person to sleep
i write the manifests read by those who wear all black
those who chain smoke and develop that hack
i write the manifests that are just so unfun
but you got to read them for arch theory 101
i write the manifestos that make the young girls cry

i write the manifestos
i write the manifestos...

Mine, from the same thread as vado's above, still works for me:

Toward a quiet architecture.

Modern architecture has often privileged the programmatic object-figure over considerations for continuity of the environment-field. The field remains unconsidered, underdeveloped, or ancillary to the disengaged and attention-grabbing object-figure.

In contrast, pre-modern urban forms evolved with a normative environment-field as the primary condition of urban engagement and cohesiveness which, once established, could then accommodate complementary incidental figures. Architects’ desire for recognition has prompted us to take every opportunity to draw attention to our projects, thereby continually adding to the visual clamor and chaos that defines the contemporary cityscape.

Why can’t we just be quiet for a change?
