Not formal at all! Some people will dress up a bit more but whatever you would normally wear to school is fine. But I agree with fluxb: this is the one moment when you have an absolute upper hand over the school admin. You are testing and judging them, not vice versa. So you should do whatever you want to do, and see how they take it. ;)
I'm going to disagree with those who say it doesn't matter.
Yes, the school is trying to convince you that you should go there, but its also your first chance to talk face-to-face with the dean, department chair and professors so that they know who you are. As I see it, if you're serious about your education you wouldn't risk loosing out on a opportunity like that. Do you need to dress for the Ritz? No, of course not. But don't go in looking like a slouchy, something I have seen at open houses.
My personal rule of thumb as of late has been neat jeans, dress shoes (with a properly matching belt), dress shirt and a sweater. A tie depends on how I'm feeling, but more often than not I wear one.
Also: some of this ties back into the fact that I have a number of facial piercings I have to get people to see beyond. I've never had a problem in academic circles, but often rather play it safe.
And make sure to check your dress shirt isn't sticking out of an open zipper. That was the end of me. 3 year of being called shirtballs by the dean's office.
Open House (Yale) Dress Code
So...
how formal are these things? Stupid question I know, but I'm an Open House virgin.
Also, anyone else heading to New Haven on Thursday?
I'll be the brown guy with the dodgy British accent.
Cheerio
you're in already, who cares..

Take a glance through the "Look Inside" feature on amazon's website...it should give you a pretty good idea ;)
as long as you look like a pretentious douche, you'll have no trouble fitting in ;)
