PhD fall 2011?

kgoh

Hello! Just wondering how many of you are entering PhD programs in architecture, urban planning, public policy, geography, engineering, or other related fields this fall. Where are you coming from, and what do you intend to do?

For my part, I've been in practice as an architect for several years, and am looking to research institutional systems (economic, political, social) and their impact on public space. Hoping to reinforce my teaching career and/or work in urban policy think tank in the future.

Sounds very interesting, kayg.

Are you starting this year? Which field?

Yes, starting this fall. Urban planning, or geography, or a more critical theory-based program.

I'm sure you've heard about the importance of "fit," kayg: making sure there are faculty (at least one or two, hopefully more) who do the kind of work (conceptually, methodologically, topically) that interests you.

This sounds like the biggest "duh" possible, and should of course go without saying. Still, it's always surprising how many doctoral students end up in a program, or working with an advisor, where there's no fit at all. That's an unhappy if not miserable situation that's easily avoidable with a lot of research (on schools, programs, and faculty) up front.

Great good luck to you! It's a blast.... a long, slow blast.
