Ok, so the gist of it I was not ready to take the test. Epically bombed it. 370 on the verbal, and 610 on the math. I took it in early december so i cant take it again until jan. My gpa is 3.2 overall and 3.4 in major. do i have any chance of getting in at all? i was planning on applying to columbia, sciarc, uic, wustl, utaustin, rice, asu, uic, cca.
i know that some have said its not too important but most schools suggest you get in the 500's. do you think certain shools would be lenient about accepting late scores if i try to take it again in jan.
short answer is yes, you'll have trouble. uic and uta may be different because they're public schools, but most are going to have a minimum threshold you need to get across. check each one's individually.
you may also have to check each one in terms of accepting a late score. seems to me that harvard would, since deliberations weren't until february (way back when).
as for overall impact: for most programs, the gre is a kind of tie-breaker. meaning, if you're in a pool of 4-5 people that are being considered for the final 2 spots, you may lose out to someone with a higher gre. my own experience as a reviewer is that it would almost never be a primary consideration. a low score, with everything else stellar, may just indicate you're not the best test taker.
Did you take Viagria...thinking it was a multiple vitamin?
Then have a reaction which lasted for more than four hours...and well it was hard to sit and concentrate during the test.
Some schools do not have a "minimum score" threshold. However, if you are applying to a highly selective school then a competitive score will be on your advantage. As Outed mentioned, the GRE is a tie-braker for most schools.
JUST GOTO A STATE SCHOOL FOR CHEAPER AND CALL IT A DAY - IT AINT WORTH IT TO GO THROUGH THE HASSLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND NOT GETTING A JOB - YOUR EXPERIENCE AND LEARNING IN SCHOOL IS WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT. TRY HARD AND QUESTION AUTHORITY.
The job I have right now I beat out a bunch of UCLA and UCB graduates...and UCB is right around the corner.
I went to a lame ass private school and paid 100k for my education.
Thanks for your informative response outed. I'll check with the schools and see how they are about accepting late scores. I was kind of banking on the idea that some committees wouldn't review applications until some time after the deadline or that I'll get thrown to the bottom of the pile.
Public state schools can't be that bad right? I'm not really looking forward to being 100k in debt anyways.
The answer to everyone else: I idiotically drank 4 cups of coffee the day before, which I guess turned out to be the equivalent of taking crack. was wired all night. I think psyched myself out during the test. or... I could just be incompetent.
ETS has a dumb rule that you can only take it once a month even if you cancel your scores. What's the point of making it available everday if you can only take it every 30 days? don't answer that, I'm just ranting. Thanks for the notes of sympathy, guys :)
mespellrong, my comment was actually in response to Justin Ather Maud, who apparently is somehow a student in a top 10 arch program despite having done abysmally bad on the GRE. But you have a point: I made the mistaken presumption that if someone is an arch student or wants to be one, they will necessarily become architects.
And of course, just because you do crappy on the GRE doesn't mean you're dumb. It's just an indicator that you MIGHT be dumb when it comes to basic maths and vocab, given there weren't any extenuating circumstances that might have affected your test scores negatively.
610 math is respectable - 50th percentile. I don't think that'll preclude you from grad school. I think you should study vocab and drills and retake the exam with an eye on increasing your verbal score, which is 20th percentile. The 50th percentile for verbal is only 470 or so. My thinking is that you will greatly increase the caliber of school you can get into if you re-sit and then apply in a semester.

( i realize you're not applying to the gsd, but that's my frame of reference in terms of trying to answer your questions.)
I would like to know what you did the night before taking the exam?
Did you break the cardinal rule of sports and have sex with your significant other all night long?
Did you go on a bender and drink the Green Stuff?
Did you....help me out people....why would one do so poorly on an exam?
Did you take Viagria...thinking it was a multiple vitamin?

Yes I was yelling....
With 370 on the verbal, I'm pleasantly surprised with your ability to put a sentence together. Retake your gre asap.

Depends on your entire package, i would think. I did worse than you and I got into top 10 grad program.
@Justing Ather Maud, where did you get into? Did you have 3.8 gpa or something like that?
Wow, architects really are dumber than they initially seem.
Don't confuse architects with people who want to be students.
Yes you are screwed... Get used to it.
And FYI you were screwed when you chose Architecture, not when your did poorly on that test.

Was a student.
