I am applying to some of top-tier M.Arch1 programs this year, but I am still struggling with my statement of purpose. I graduated from BFA in design, so I think I have quite superficial ideas on contemporary architecture. Though I took several classes in history and theory of architecture few years back.
So, here's my question. How elaborate should a statement of purpose be in terms of question? Should I present my own incisive question on contemporary architecture and plans to figure it out through the study and practice?
Well, I showed my draft to one of my teachers in media theory, and he said it should contain my unique and specific question on architecture, rather than saying typical things. (I wrote about how the city I grew up shape my spatial sense, and how I have been intrigued by uncanny urban landscape caused by blah blah...., the ongoing process in which I now want to intervene rather than observe, followed by related work experiences and reasons for choosing each school.)
Oh, I am not sure this is gonna be understood...For sure English is not my first language.
No, made sense to me. And I think what you've outlined here is a good point of departure for your statement.
You don't have to (nor should you really) point out a precise thesis topic / research goal, but definitely talk about your specific interests in architecture and what you hope to (broadly) pursue during your masters career (and how that would fit into the particular schools you're looking into).
The prinicipal of the office I just left was a professor at a top West coast school and he would bring in school applications that he was given to review and judge. A few times I was able to look at these apps and paid attention to some of the commonalities of each application element. I was surprised about the letter of intent for most of the well-graded applications as they were very straight forward about their intentions in the field of architecture. They seemed to be very simple and to-the-point about doing something very specific in the field, like becoming a teacher or going back to a native land to build low-income housing.
Personally, I think there is a fine line between including your own critical questions and observations about architecture and just explaining your simple intention in the field (become a professor, build low-income housing, research technology in construction, etc.). I suggest you write about your intentions in the field and in school while making suggestions and hints about your critical thoughts of architecture.
