Can anyone recommend any good (and AFFORDABLE, or even better, expense-paid (or provides generous scholarship/award amounts)) pre-architecture or urban planning programs for people with non-architecture/urban planning backgrounds (and have NO money, lol)?
The only ones I know of are the ones at:
- Columbia
- Harvard
- Cal
- UCLA
- USC
Unfortunately most of the other ones I'm finding are only for high schoolers, or are just wayyy too expensive. And not many seem to have a focus on urban planning, just architecture.
My undergrad degree is in environmental studies but I've always been interested in architecture and really want to gain some type of experience in it in order to broaden my range of technical skills in design/drafting/spatial analysis. (My undergrad in env. studies was all about theory and hardly any technical, practical work). I don't want to do all architecture though, and I have no plans of becoming an architect. Ultimately, urban planning is what I really want to do. I'll be applying for grad programs either this year or the coming years, but I'm also looking for some type of pre-grad school program involving elements from both architecture and urban planning that would allow me to branch out from environmental studies and gain that experience I need in those related fields.
I honestly don't know of any other programs that really fit what I'm looking for, but anyone else does please let me know!
Most Canadian Urban Planning programs don't require any sort of previous experience in that area. My friend was just accepted to Dalhousie's MUP program starting September and he graduated from a BA in English/History double major. Most of my U.P. graduate TA's at Waterloo had unrelated undergrads as well. Most Canadian foreign tuition is still cheaper than out-of-state tuition in the US.
UWM has a joint M.Arch/M.UP program, I don't know how they are with funding though. I'm sure you can take some arch classes while you were there if you wanted, since as an arch undergrad there I could have taken urban planning classes.
Donno what you mean when you say "pre-grad school program", do you mean like a summer program?
Calling all architects! The Emerson Cup is back again! We are inviting architects, real estate developers, building owners, engineers, consultants and students with innovative projects across the fields of air-conditioning and refrigeration. Do you think you have what it takes to walk away with the Cup? Then apply at www.digitalscroll.com/emersoncup
Thanks for the link. Although I wonder if college students or recent graduates are also allowed to participate in these programs. They look to be only for (or geared toward) high schoolers.

Isn't urban planning an oxymoron?

ARCHCareers.org maintains a list of all summer programs; granted the information is for summer 2010, the websites are accurate.
