Pfeiffer Partners worked with Harvey Mudd College to design a new residence hall on campus in addition to implementing the residential portion of its 2011 Campus Master Plan. The new residence hall was designed to accommodate 134 beds and is on track for LEED-Silver certification. Harvey Mudd College’s campus community input informed the building’s design to ensure specific college needs where met. Architecturally, the scale of the new building is designed to be compatible with the adjacent residence halls, as well as the other academic buildings at Harvey Mudd. Concrete, glass, and metal trim are the predominant materials found throughout the College. It is the intent of the design team to be respectful of, but to reinterpret, these materials in new ways. With a unique blend of culture, social traditions and academic rigor, the new Drinkward Hall at Harvey Mudd was designed to bring student life and academia together in a way that didn’t exist on the Harvey Mudd campus. Carefully designed with numerous social spaces that can be used for both socializing and study, the building enhances the unique sense of place and culture on campus.
