Salem, MA Farmer's Market Master Plan

http://www.tektoniksarchitects.com/

For the 375th anniversary of the Salem Market in 2009, the Salem Chamber of Commerce engaged Tektoniks to design and plan the latest reincarnation of the Salem Farmer’s Market in historic Derby Square.

Working with Salem Main Streets and the Salem Chamber of Commerce, Tektoniks accommodated the needs of more than 25 farm and non-farm vendors. Each vendor had specific requirements for square footage, electrical service, loading access, and display areas. Conformance with ADA, fire codes, and local zoning requirements was essential, along with careful coordination with neighboring residents and retailers. Loading access within a dense urban neighborhood also fell within Tektoniks’ responsibility to resolve.

The design creates concentrated areas of display and vending along Front Street and along Old Town Hall. A visual “spine” was created from Essex and Derby Streets to draw visitors to the central focal point of the Market. Children’s areas, performing arts areas, and demonstration areas immersed visitors in the activity and ambience of the Market experience. Service and storage areas were consolidated away from the public.

Held on Thursday afternoons between mid-June and late-October, local officials estimated an average of more than 3000 patrons weekly during a typical 3 hour period for the highly successful Market.
