NVZ Itzling by Lechner Schallhammer Scheicher

The local supply center of the Raiffeisen Association forms a new gateway to the city in the northern part of the state capital. Deliberately positioned at the border between Elisabethvorstadt and Bergheim, the building – dynamically rotated into the axes of the surrounding streets – creates an architectural landmark within the urban landscape. The project engages with the urban space on three distinct levels. At street level, a nearly 200-meter-long sweeping glass facade along Raiffeisenstraße mirrors the dynamism of the street. On the first floor, a landscaped terrace, adorned with 40 trees and 10,000 shrubs, forms a verdant roof that establishes a spatial connection to the green Goethe settlement. This level also integrates the building’s entrances with pedestrian and bicycle paths, fostering seamless connectivity. The three suspended office floors above, characterized by their three-dimensionally tilted facades, define visual axes from the approaching streets. The inclined facades amplify the dynamic impression of the floating structure within the urban fabric. The building's external appearance is further accentuated by high-quality materials and meticulously detailed facades.

Sustainability is at the core of the design, with a gold-standard certification nearing completion. A photovoltaic system continuously generates renewable energy. During summer, the landscaped terrace provides a shaded, climate-resilient retreat for employees and visitors alike. For cyclists, 250 parking spaces are conveniently located at the entrances, while nearly all car parking – except for a few barrier-free spots – is tucked underground, ensuring the above-ground space is entirely reserved for people. The ground-floor retail spaces cater to the essential needs of the immediate vicinity, including the Goethe and Austraßensiedlung neighborhoods, the Techno-Z, and surrounding offices. Moreover, they fulfill the daily requirements of the northern parts of the state capital.

This project, conceived through the collaboration of ARGE Lechner Lechner Schallhammer as part of an architectural competition, was realized by the architect consortium ARGE Lechner Schallhammer Scheicher.
