Energy Lab | Solar Structure

The initial program for this outbuilding was to provide a structure to house an 8-panel photovoltaic array donated to The Ecology Center, a non-profit headquartered at the historic Congdon House, the oldest wood-framed structure in San Juan Capistrano, California.

MYD's design is a simple wood structure with open framing, taking aesthetic cues from the agricultural nature of the site.  Our proposal incorporated a modular green roof system at the asymmetrical gable with an angle providing for optimal solar exposure.

Using sustainable materials, including FSC-certified lumber and natural fiber composite as slats, the Energy Lab is used as an outdoor classroom for educational programs focused on energy and ecology;  it is a component of a series of site development improvements to provide interactive learning experiences for visitors of all ages at this community-based organization, directly adjacent to a working farm.
