Adapting schools built in the mid-20th century offers great opportunities as educational models continue to evolve. Early in 2012, we designed a Master Campus Plan for Brooklyn Prospect Charter School, which was moving into a former parochial elementary school built in 1968. The design included additions, extensive renovations, landscaping and an athletic field. The first phase, valued at approximately $1.6 million, was completed last September and includes state-of-the-art classrooms, a full-size gymnasium, an outdoor eating area, science labs, and a library. Brooklyn Prospect currently serves grades six through nine and will expand to 12th grade over the next three years. As the school grows into its new home, our sustainable design principles will be integrated into a series of new spaces that support the school’s diversity and its International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
