The winners’ site-specific installations for the 2018 exhibition both document their work and give form to their ideas.
Stretching across the gallery window, Lap Chi Kwong and Alison Von Glinow’s installation features a scale plywood model of their Table Top Apartments, a “housing project that rethinks how people live and share space together.” Literally building from the base of the table, the post-and-slab composition of circle, square, and rectangular elements create a “diversity of spatial experiences.”
Dan Spiegel’s installation combines a grid of nine sectional models, “cut in unconventional ways” with overlaid light projections. The resulting spatial effect illuminates his firm SAW // Spiegel Aihara Workshop’s interest in capturing solid and ephemeral moments in time.
Anya Sirota exhibits a series of five freestanding models arrayed diagonally across the gallery. Each represents architectural interventions and scenographies recently completed by her studio Akoaki. The series offers a glimpse of “the playful lexicon” established by her activist interventions in “unlikely contexts.”
A brightly hued freestanding triangular rack holds colorful ‘take away’ postcards of 20 projects by Coryn Kempster, of Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster. The installation, like their built work, provides a “familiar, un-precious and accessible framework that invites interaction.”
Cadaster partners Gabriel Cuéllar and Athar Mufreh present four research studies that illustrate what they call the “architecture of territories:” parcels, rights-of-way, watersheds, and urban ecologies. Plans, models, and other documentary material, as well as an interactive property map, provide “a view of the forms and political imperatives of land division.”
Bryony Roberts presents a large-scale graphic vinyl pattern that moves from the floor up the west wall of the gallery, continuing Bryony Roberts Studio’s explorations of geometric pattern and materiality begun in Rome. Inset V-shaped shelves will display images of past projects, including videos of her performance works.
