Starting a thread for Oscar nomination and award reactions. Because I like celebrity gossip but I'm not a commenting member on any of those Hollywood forums.

1. Ryan Gosling deserves an award for Barbie, for sure. But I'm not upset that Margot Robbie didn't get a nom for it. She did great, but Gosling did something amazing.

2. I'm upset that Greta Gerwig didn't get a nom for Barbie. FFS, Scorsese again? <fart noise>

3. Poor Things was a *fantastic* movie and I hope it wins all the things. I'd love for Mark Ruffalo to win, his character was hilarious, but I think Gosling deserves it more for Barbie. Also, I wasn't completely thrilled with the Poor Things costumes, they were close but not quite right, IMO.

4. I seriously just learned today that Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan aren't the same person.

I love some quirky kitchen appliances and gadgets.

Recently found out about a German egg cracker for the perfect hard-boiled egg called a eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher that I'm looking forward to getting soon!

The other thing is an air-fryer, this thing is a game changer honestly and I'm looking at upgrading to the biggest and best ninja air-fryer there soon.

Searching for specific image of drafting room

Hello everyone,

I am researching for a design Project in school and I am searching for an image that I have seen before but cannot seem to find now.

The Image shows a drafting room of I think some large company´s engineering department. There are many drafting tables in the room and they all have telephones or fax machines that have their cables individually connected to a structure below the high ceiling (This is the important part). I feel like the space had a Richard Rogers high-tech vibe to it but I did not find it amongst his work.

Not about praising or dissing the architect.

In a recent post on Archinect, it was, as it appears, to be claimed that he died. If people did due diligence, it would be clear that it's false. First, he's 78 or so about not 70.

If someone with such a star status in this profession, if he died, Wikipedia page on him would have been updated in a matter of hours if not days especially when actual established recognized media would have covered it and made a not of it. Confirming the factual basis of the claim. For popular stars who die, Wikipedia would be updated within 30 minutes of it being covered by mainstream media. Let's have the facts straight. I didn't just check Wikipedia. I did do a general search engine search for any mentions in mainstream / credible media sources or any other sensible credible sources.

If Rem Koolhaas died, it would be known on public media just as it has for other starchitects. Even Archinect would have made an official statement. Given this is August, it wo...

hello, i am in need of your help to identify my chairs. I once bought these from a fleamarket in Hamburg, Germany. I put them up for sale once due to moving, but someone messaged me that it was a dumb idea and said it could be Hartmut Lohmeyer. But i cant find any tags or brand on the chairs except for the “58” and “9” mark on the bottum.

they are similar to Walter Knoll’s designs and that of Karsen-Lofod. But the details are still off. Any help or new directions would be much appreciated!

Interior Rope Bridge

Hello Community,

I am an Architect, looking to install an interior rope suspension bridge in my home. A span of roughly 10’. I have looked for some literature to determine whether there is modern precedent for getting such a thing permitted. My thinking is that if I can demonstrate that the structural materials (either steel cable or robust rope), compare equivalently with the minimum requirement for joists in the code for load capacity, then that would be important. Further, that the ‘railings’ are designed to not permit an opening beyond 4”. Perhaps tightly netted/woven rope and or cable.

What are the obvious code violations that such a thing can not work around? Im not familiar with a minimum amount of floor ‘movement’, but perhaps that could be an issue.

Can anyone point me towards recent precedents that they are aware of for interior suspension bridges, that would have had to respond to somewhat recent residential building codes?

Any other insights would be most welcomed!

Hi,

I printed a map of Midtown New York City using 3D print files. These files contain buildings that are more complex than simple cubes and are quite detailed. I am pretty happy with the outcome.

European Travel Time!

Yup. It’s time for a vacation to Europe!

My partner and I are planning on going back to Europe in May / June of 2023 for a two-week vacation. We’ve both been backpacking through Europe while in college. That was . . . . damn, 20 plus years ago though.

We’ve each been to:

Iceland, Ireland, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, and Finland.

My partner has also been to Poland, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

We’re looking to go to 2-3 areas that are connected by the rail system. What I’m looking for is recommendations for can’t miss areas. We’d use your recommendations to help us refine our research and trip planning. They don’t have to be architecturally themed, but it would be nice. We're both the type of people who like to move around / experience things rather than sit by a beach and drink.

So, what say your locals or recent travelers. If you were to travel in Europe for two weeks where would you like to go (or not go)...

Computational Design for Sculpture Ideation and Fabrication

Forgive me if I've landed in the wrong forum. Not sure where to start. I've recently retired from 40+ years in transporation and logistics, and intend on spending my new-found time/energy to begin creating medium to large scale sculptures. I've been stumbling around the internet trying to get a sense of possible aids to my design process. And while going down that rabbit hole I also realized there are all sorts of options for fabrications as well. Ugh! I'd actually embrace an in-person training program (university or whatever) if such an option might make sense. I don't want or need another degree (plenty of those hangin on my wall already). So I could imagine signing up and paying for courses ad hoc if that would be allowed. The main point would be to get started with a wide-based survey and then pursue the specific specializations that interest me. Any suggestions would be welcome. T

Noodling, which is when one catches catfish with their bare hands, is legal in Louisiana as of Monday. Not like that’s stopped anyone before.

On a hot July afternoon at Caney Lake in Chatham, a small Louisiana town an hour-and-a-half north of Alexandria, two friends are waist deep in murky water, while a third friend holds on to the small motorized boat to make sure it doesn’t drift too far away from his friends in the water.

A while ago I made a post about whether I should go to M.arch graduate school or join the successful family business in low voltage security.

I studied business in university and really hated it. I taught myself Rhino, V-Ray and Adobe software out of self interest. I have been designing/rendering products for a couple of years as that is what I love doing. But after getting married, my father swayed me to join the business, even for just a few years. I am currently working 10-12 hour shifts doing jobs that I really hate like programming TV remotes and testing fire systems... etc. There is a lot of workflow streamlining that I am planning on implementing once I am more familiar with the business in general -there are a ton of issues and the environment is very cut-throat. I am thankful for the opportunity but I really cannot see myself doing this into my thirties. I really dread going to sleep and redoing just another day of alarm installations. I feel so misplaced because I love des...
