ICON Initiative 99 Design Competition - License Agreement Rip Off?

Curious if anyone has taken a look at the ICON Initiative 99 Design Competition License Agreement? ICON is the concrete 3D printing company working primarily in Austin.

As an entrant you have to sign this licensing agreement that includes this text:

This Agreement is being made in connection with Licensor’s participation in ICON’s Initiative 99 Competition (“I99”) and covers all I99 material, documents, videos, drawing, schemes, works of authorship, information, concepts, inventions, and ideas submitted by Licensor to ICON in connection with I99 (the “Licensed Materials”). Licensor retains ownership of the Licensed Materials subject to the licenses granted under this Agreement.

Is architecturecompetitions.com a scam?

I have done a few competitions, among which there is this architecturecompetitions.com website that is expensive ($110 or so) to join each competition. Besides its relatively high fee, I have a few doubts about it and would like to hear your opinions.

1. No feedback at all after submission. You have to go to the website to find out that they actually announced the result...That seems very lack of care.

2. It constantly holds concept/idea competitions. You can find quite a few ongoing ones any time you go there. However, it does not seem any will get built because they are calling for concept submissions. That makes me wonder what's the point for us designers to pay the organizer in order to share our designs with them.

3. Publicity. I am not sure even if one wins, how valuable is their publication. Anyone knows.

I am also looking into a few other competition websites. I just can't help but wonder if anyone shares the feeling about this website as I do.

Originally, set to be announced April 26, the announcement has been pushed to May 2nd. Does anybody have any idea why this would happen? Do winners get notified beforehand?

Competition Submission Dilemma

Hello to you, wonderful people! I have been wondering how the copyright/author right works if for a competition I submit a project which my partner and I did together at school, but then I edited and developed it a lot myself, but still some things remained of what we did together. Will my partner have a right to sue me (or ask for money/ honorary mention if projects wins) although there will basically be just a tiny part of what he/she did anymore? What would you do in this case, if you were a partner, or me? Just really curious.

Hey everyone,

I'm an architecture student from Sweden and I just finished my third year. I think collaborating on a competition entry can be a great way to spend time productively during quarantine while getting to know other like minded people. Therefore, I'm looking for someone/some people to enter a competition with during the summer break. I have previous experience with student competitions and the last one I entered was UIA-HYP cup where we managed to reach finalist position out of almost 900 entries.

Ok so I am studying business for my undergraduate degree and I taught myself industrial design because that is what I love. I picked up Rhino and V-Ray and Ive designed many of products for competitions and for clients: Aiden-kashi.com

I really want to win awards because I don't have a degree in Industrial Design. I already won a few, but the deadline for the Red Dot Concept Design award is coming up soon. I designed this smoke detector for fun and was wondering if it is worth submitting. Or, if I should change something about the design. I am asking because it costs a few hundred dollars to submit a design for the Red Dot and if it doesn't stand a chance, I will just save that money.

Suitable building orientation in a hot coastal city

Hello, what would be the best building orientation for a 3 story building in a coastal city, facts summary is:

- coastal city, but the lot is few km away from the beach

- Southern hemisphere, near the city of Fortaleza, Brazil

- Humidit pretty high all year long

- Prevailing winds direction from South-East

- Avg. temp are 21-32 all year long, and there are only two seasons in the year raining and non-raining

If it is a retangular building, for maximum climate confort which way is orientation is best?

Hello all,

So recently I’ve been interested in learning more about competitions but I can only find limited information online without actually entering them (which I am definitely not available to do yet haha.) I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate those who have knowledge or experience help me out:
1) Do you have to be licensed to enter? (Can a student enter by themself? Or do they need to be part of a licensed firm or sponsored by an NCARB registered architect?)

2) This obviously has a huge range, but what are typically the entry fees? And are there usually winnings associated with coming in first?

3) If your design is lucky enough to be built, what comes next? I know not every competition actually gets built but what is the common outcomes?

4) What deliverables are required? Is it basically like studio in school where we show pretty plans and renders, or do they often require it to be taken a step farther and show future mechanical plans and structural requirements...

All of my professors are licensed architects and/or engineers... Of course a theoretical knowledge of architecture elements is crucial in Interior Design but can they legally require designing elements which, in real life are reserved just for licensed architects and engineers in Interior Design program?

It was a proposal for a seafront master plan for the city of Barcelona which, despite being located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, it has never really exploited its strategic position and its relationship with the seafront is an issue that remains unresolved.

Dodecahedron lamp GCSE Build

Hi Guys,

I have found s video which shows you how to cut the dodecahedron.

1. Is there any way to cut holes into the pentagon faces after they are cut with angles to make a frame?

2. Can you cut the angles with a handsaw instead of using a miter, and bevel thingy saw?

I have also found a second video that seems relatively easy. Here, how would you cut the angles with a handsaw? And what would the angle have to be to join the parts to make the pentagon and the bevel angles to join the pentagons together to make the dodecahedron.

I am 15 years old, and I am planing to make a dodecahedron lamp for my GCSE Product Design Project. I have looked up many ways in YouTube and the Internet to find an easy way to make a wooden dodecahedron frame, but many of the methods to make on are very complicated.

Are there easy any methods or templates that can be used to accomplish my goal?

I need help ASAP as I need to start making the frame at the start of September. The image is what I want the frame to look like.
