for those of you who follow outsider cinema, this guy is a legend. He’s made some of the most incomprehensible train wrecks that are up there in stature as cult classics like “the room.” He also claims that he is an architect (which I think explains the messianic/god complex he has toward himself in his movies). However, I am very curious what buildings he’s worked on. Does anyone here know?

Juneteenth, the new East Rosedale Monument, and being anti-racist

I work for a social justice nonprofit; we have today off for Juneteenth, so I'm posting about it.

Being blatantly self-promotional, I'm starting with the project my husband *just* finished installing for artist Christopher Blay, the East Rosedale Monument. It's located across the street from the future National Juneteenth Museum, by BIG, covered in Archinect news here. The East Rosedale Monument specifically addresses how important public transit has been to the civil rights movement, and we architects and planners all know how critical public transit is to being a functioning society (More trains! More buses!).

For people who want to learn more about being anti-racist and how to celebrate Juneteenth, I have been doing Ashani Mfuko's 30-day Countdown to Juneteenth Challenge. Went to the opening on Saturday and it was glorious. There are sop many interesting and cool things happening in Detroit. And I can say this: of all the Midwestern cities I go to regularly Detroiters are *definitely* the most stylish dressers.

My husband's company Ignition Arts designed, fabricated, and installed the Charles McGee sculptures. Charles approved them shortly before his passing and the McGee family *wants* them to be played on, so please touch!

Curious to hear feedback from those who have worked or know someone who has worked at these celebrated architects who got their start at OMA. Obvs marketing is mostly what we happen to see on outside but each of these pretend to be something very different. I'm thinking of BIG, Rex, MVRDV, Gang, Buro Ole Schereen, etc.

Do they each live up to the marketing? What's the vibe? Nepotism still a thing? Big $ developer projects vs celebrated 'architecture' projects?

Hello everyone,

My name is Sam, I'm a highschool student in France and am currently working on a project on architectural movements, mainly focusing on "organic architecture" from the 70s. In my project, I was asked to get in contact with an American partner to help me throughout my research. I dont expect anybody to accompany me throughout the project, but if you want to, please let me know so i can give you my contact info.

I found quite a lot of information online about organic architecture, such as its history, evolution and main architects but lack real opinions. I do like the style in general but i want to know what real world architects think of it. Is it nice to design but very hard to carry out such a project? Do everyday people ask for houses like that? is there an even better type of architecture in your opinion, and what is it? I'm open to all ideas and unpopular opinions.

At my firm, after Hurricane Ian hit our city, we decided to start a public information blog. It began with lots of information on how to protect, salvage, and mitigate damage to one's house, and is now shifting toward sharing information on design practices that we use at our firm to provide longevity and resiliency. This kind of information has been valuable for people in our local community, who can't otherwise afford our services (or perhaps wouldn't make use of them) to get info like this. Just as the title asks. It's a pretty silly question, I guess, but I'm applying to architecture schools as of current so I've really starting getting into the field, more than I was before anyways, and I'm just so curious on why it's so common. Is 3 a magic number? Is it just a big coincidence? Is there some contract you sign in blood at your licensing exam that promises that you will work for an architecture firm whose name is 3 letters long? Am I only gonna know in my 5th year by being pulled into a pitch-black room in the campus catacombs? I've just gotta know, LOL

designing for relatives

Over the holiday, I was approached by members of my close family asking if I would help them design a small cottage. I gave them a tentative "yes" but I am unsure how well I can get my family members to stay organized.

I told them that I would only help if they were highly intentional and organized about the process. I tried to explain that it wasn't something that we could only discuss at reunions or by sharing pinterest posts. I don't mind engaging casually, but I feel like there has to be more structure to the process. Granted, I will be doing most of this for free in my spare time outside of work.

Has anyone navigated this sorta thing in the past (or past posts?) and what were your biggest take-aways?

A few weeks ago a couple protesters threw tomato soup at a Van Gogh, now two more winners threw some mashed potatoes at a Monet. This is in protest to climate change. Apparently, some folks believe that protesting can fix climate. It can’t. When I was 3 I really really wanted a flying skateboard, but I understood that I couldn’t protest for a thing that hadn’t yet been invented. These jerk offs should spend their days running on a hamster wheel rigged up to a generator. At least then they will be contributing to the grid. I’d suggest engineering school, but they likely don’t have the iq. The culture of protesting and activism surrounding the topic of climate change is counterproductive and reductive. It ignores and minimizes the work that people on the front of energy technology, transportation, architecture, and landscape architecture actually do. Hello! Would anyone like to share the shitty men of architecture spreadsheet or another spreadsheet of men to avoid in architecture that I have heard about? I have not seen updated ones from recent years. A document should not be kept from others because of fear that someone will get in trouble. To abuse someone else is a decision that someone chose to make; they must face the repercussions (or if they are not brought down from powerful positions, we must avoid them for our safety).

Not only would I and many others appreciate the sharing of this knowledge, but it is necessary for our very safety (especially as young women). The amount of abuse by men with power, especially over students and interns is not ok. SILENCE IS VIOLENCE.

I am thinking for example of SISTEMA 45 designed by Ettore Sottsass jr. for Olivetti in 1972.
