I am in Martin Finio's studio this semeseter. We are working on a community courthouse. We started with the courtroom and are working out.

Here is some of my work so far, the diagram on this was drawn, but I hope to automate it with Rhinoscript. Anyone who knows rhinoscript is welcome to offer their help.

https://archinect.com/blog/article/21450113/building-project-2005 Building Project 2005 Thom Moran 2005-03-26T11:17:34-05:00 >2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00
Hey everyone,

Sorry for the delay in my posting. I have been BUSY.

So the building project has officially begun. I know that many of you out there who are considering the grad school decision dilemma might be interested in the process, so I am going to try to keep you up to date from now on. We started on Monday and by Thursday we all had to contribute to site documentation, a huge site model of the neighborhood and research into various topics related to the project. These ranged from climate, program, building systems, history, etc. They were all over the map and quite informative topics. We were all required to make presentations in groups. Although some were better than others, overall they were quite good. I struggled with the short amount of time we were given (as I always do) but that is life in graduate school. The next step is the individual proposals. We have until Monday to design a house for the project, then it becomes more of a group enterprise. The class ...
https://archinect.com/blog/article/21449969/sketchbooks Sketchbooks Thom Moran 2005-02-19T15:14:30-05:00 >2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00
So I have to admit that I don't keep a sketchbook anymore. I did as an undergrad, and I frantically scribbled down evrything I saw that was compelling or any thought that popped into my head. The thing is, every time I write something down or sketch out an idea, I ususally forget about it. I just stopped keeping one and I seem to act on more of my ideas than I ever did when I was writing them down all the time. Someone once told me a story about when Corb met Einstein. Corb kept copius notebooks and assumed that Einstein did the same. He asked Einstein about it and Einstein responded that he did not keep any notebooks because if he had worthwhile thought he would remember it. Now, that story may be urban legend, but it rings true with me some days.

Now, I know this is near criminal in the minds of many architects, professors and students, but I don't think drawing is that important any more. To me, the mythology about drawing is a result of architects building a mythology ...
https://archinect.com/blog/article/21449866/sculpture-thesis-show Sculpture Thesis Show Thom Moran 2005-02-06T18:25:52-05:00 >2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00
dude(tte)s,

So I went to the Sculpute Thesis opening last night. My friend Erin was showing some of her work along with other graduating sculpture students. It was a good time, but I realized I don't know how to look at sculpture. Or maybe I do. What I do know is what I like and I like the following:

rock

brightly colored logs

fig newtons

shoes

TTFN
https://archinect.com/blog/article/21449857/beer-and-parking-garages Beer and Parking Garages Thom Moran 2005-02-03T21:04:19-05:00 >2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00
So I just went out for beers and pizza with my studio critic Turner Brooks. This guy is amazing. On the way we took a detour to run up the ramps of an old building that has been converted into a parking garage. He was running up the ramps ahead of us. It was awesome.

Then at dinner we had a good conversation about the history of the school. Turner was a student here when the school burned down and when Charles Moore was the dean. It sounds like it was a pretty crazy place to be back then.

Anyway, just some half drunk anectdotes on a Thursday night. I keep promising pictures and keep not providing them. The problem is that the digital camera i took them on is locked up in a friend's desk right now. oh well.

for the time being here is a shot of the wreckage from the last project. This semester has been amazing. Somebody is always making something impressive. Gotta love it. Makes quite a mess as you can see.

here is a shot of me at the crit later that afternoon. (no, i did not eat basswood, but the peanut butter and jelly were applied to the bread with basswood). If you are wondering what it tasted like, imagine the smell of laser cut basswood. mmm... basswood.

This project went well. I used the two of the three CNC mills for the first time which was a great experience. At first they are intimidating, but fairly straitforward after you use them a few times. Being down in the basement in the middle of the night with two CNC mills whirring away while you try to model the next piece in rhino will drive you insane, though. The white concrete walls, fluorescent lights and buzzing machinery made me feel like I was in a sci-fi movie from the sixties.

Photos soon!

TTFN

https://archinect.com/blog/article/21449814/back-to-it Back to it Thom Moran 2005-01-30T21:26:13-05:00 >2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00
Well, after a rough semester last year I am back to it.

The building project is happening this semester, so by the end of the summer my class will have designed and built a house ourselves. It is already proving to be an interesting experience.

Good News: I was elected to be the website manager for the building project. (full disclosure: I was running unopposed). So look for the new site sometime soon.

As a lead in to the building project we have been doing a housing studio. Our first project looked at the scale of the body, our second project (which is due tomorrow) is an analysis of an existing building that deals with dwelling. I will post some pictures soon, I have to get back to work. I deleted the entries to avoid any further problems. I have been under too much pressure and I am venting in the wrong way.

I never meant to discourage people from attending Yale, I really love the program. However, my pointed comments were inappropriate and definately gave that impression. For that I am truly sorry.

I hope to give a better impression in the future, but I have not been sleeping much and just feel pretty terrible. I will not let that color my entries from now on.

Again, accept my apologies and we can move on with this project in a more constructive manner.

TTFN
