The baby is here! Nicole and I rushed to the hospital last night (30 days early) after she started getting contractions 5 minutes apart, then 4, 3, 2, 1 :) Believe it or not, it only took a single hard push and little Kami was introduced to the both of us. She's such a little peanut that they've been monitoring her in the preemie unit--just as a precaution. Looks like we'll be going home on Saturday, and the baby can come home Sunday. Everyone is welcome to send wishes by phone, email or stop by Torrance Memorial (Room 308 for now).

http://www.flickr.com/photos/virtualarchitect/collections/

Yesterday, I was asked to update SCI-Arc's site with the NAAB Student Performance Criteria. Seeing as how WASC is visiting, I think everyone is trying to put on the "best face" for the visiting review team. After reading the criteria, I finally got a clear picture of what it means to be educated as an architect. It's funny how it took a month after completing graduate thesis to figure this out. Or, maybe, just maybe, schools need to be a bit more involved in fully developing their students--at least make this kind of information readily available. Now I have a much more focused set of targets to pass on to my future students. Read on...

Go Skate | Grow your inner thesis

Wow, today I got back on a skateboard for the first time in a very long time. I don't mean just to cruise the halls at school or do an occasional alley session at my house. I mean in a bowl, at a park, body at risk. There's something about subversive sports that has attracted me since playing table tennis against myself with half the playing field tilted vertical. I'm inner competitive. Whether it's skating, snowboarding, kiteboarding, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and especially surfing... sport is such a bad label. These endeavors are a lifestyle--better yet, a community. 'X'Games. X for Extreme. Games for the non-sport of it. Open-source, if you will, and much bigger than the word team. With the proper community spirit, each learned technique is shared with the whole, and over time, new boudaries are folded into the group repetoir, i.e. Felix with a dynamic bag of tricks. Though, it's not enough just to have a bag of tricks. Your moves. Worse yet,...

So, thesis has officially started. My advisors are in place, Ed Keller & Juan Azulay. And, my alter-ego has shown up to help keep things balanced. The plans are set. Bags are packed. What is theory good for? How does it help a married guy with three kids to father? Well... I see it as a bit of a conundrum. On one hand, I've been opened up to some beautiful texts and films, and on the other, I've been collecting some very heavy rocks--all of which do not belong in my backpack. Though, many of them can be used to build a foundation. Some I'll be able to pass on to others.

Thesis + Theory | OPB... Is thesis about being a maverick? Do we defend our liberties and take the flak while executing the orders of another? In my mind, thesis is about focusing your path, creating a link to a historical trajectory, and pushing a new idea(s) forward. It's about an incredible lightness...

The most amazing thing happened at the beach last week. After a 1.5 hr session in shoulder high wind swell””just enough to say hello to a few local friends””an older local guy who I don't care for much exchanged small talk as I went to the shower to change. I briefly mentioned that I was “still stretching out my wetsuit” because it was the first real day that the water temperature dropped below 60 degrees. I was already on my way to the shower when he called me back... he actually offered me a brand new fullsuit (3/2 Body Glove XXL MATR1X worn a total of about 20 times). Insane. From what I can piece together he's leaving for the islands (Hawai'i) next week and won't need the suit. Three things coincided here and I'm not sure what to make of them. One, just before the session, I noticed my current wetsuit's zipper was broken, but was able to make it work for the time being. Since the end of last semester, I've been on a search for the roots of my own trajectory. Trips to Milwaukee, Chicago and New York have helped. Hi friends -- God I miss the irreverent, interstudio banter. Funny thing is... I was drinking tonight, too (at the Panelite BBQ). So ya, I'm up at 2:30 AM hearkening back to the good ol' 2G_X core days looking to see if my old Dodge rims will fit on my Tahoe so I can be safe with new tires so I can drive out to the Colorado River on Sunday for a kidless 3-day with the wife and friends so I can get 1/2 drunk like Anon2 and hurt myself wakeboarding and skurfing down to the sandbar and through the no wake zone in Red Rock Canyon. On a lighter and not so 1/2 note, Nicole is now 7 months pregnant; it's a girl if you have not heard. We're totally in love... haha, almost 10 years of marriage is blissfully blinding! I wish you all the same. Anyway, my buzz is wearing off and the South...

Millin' ain't easy... Steve Fuchs2005-04-10T04:58:25-04:00>2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00

Ya, being the milling pimp ain't easy. A few of us in studio are working on a milling job that has taken 2 days to coordinate and prep. Let's just say it is a favor for a good friend -- and I take on favors a little too easy. The good thing is I've learned a lot about preparing deeper mills and 2D / 3D contouring. It's kind of crazy how technical you can get on just one machine. Today, I actually modeled the whole head of the mill to figure out the maximum taper angle for a deep cut into some rock hard foam, and then, vegitated in Rhino and SurfCAM for 10 hours. Fun!!!

During the chaos, a prospective M.Arch2 student who starts next semester stopped by my desk. If I remember correctly his name is Dean and he's from the Vegas area. He and his girlfriend (wife?) walked the length of the school with me as I pointed out some interesting features and fielded many questions. It was a nice break from the madness. As stated before, I'm more than willing to meet and greet with those of you t...

Long time no blog... Aggregating Steve Fuchs2005-03-31T22:05:49-05:00>2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00

I've been wrapped up in "cellular aggregation" for the past few months. A big break-thru occurred last week when I began to understand the concept and how it translates to my learning/design process. As Hernan said, this first year is about being labotomized; though, this semester is about a more hybrid condition where we are expected to start reintroducing our previous knowledge to our newfound sensibilities.

For me... (Hernan pun intended), Peter Testa has been instrumental in my understanding of growth by way of micro/macro scale experimentation. Testing and taking feedback to multiple scales of investigation, all while using digital and analog tools as quick design aids, is the root of my new process. I'm not saying that I have a mastery of it or anything, but conceptually it is affecting the limits of my architectural understanding. In a sense, you could call it a "hyperlinked/networked" design process where one grows a project by constantly being in a information loop between...

OK. We're back to business. The semester has started and our studio (let's rephrase that as "my perception of our studio"... if it's not clear to those that read this blog I speak for myself only.) has started off with a big dud. Besides an all-school electrical problem which crippled the school for a few days, thesis presentations were marginally exciting with a few gems of enlightenment. I was personally impressed by Eric Cheong's presentation which was a full-force architectural thesis that incorporated both digital technique and materiality. Also enlightening was the verbal Kung Fu master, Karl Chu, who took over the discussion at one point and championed a correlation between the human genome project and architecture. I was captivated for a long moment. Thesis and thesis-prep are under serious renovation at SCI-Arc; we may even have the option to do our thesis during summer. For those of you that are planning on applying or have applied to SCI-Arc, keep this in the back of your...

All School Meeting & Santa Steve Fuchs2004-12-05T15:24:56-05:00>2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00

Yes, there has been some drama going on; we as a student body are organizing our thoughts for the planned meeting in January. I for one, as a graduate student in the M.Arch2 program, am satisfied with our instructors, our curriculum and the school in general. Though, that seems not to be the sentiment of some very vocal undergrad students. The ball is rolling, let's stay focused and make positive changes :)

On a light-hearted note, have you ever contemplated the difference between Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus? There are distinct differences in religious and commercial symbolism.

Now, considering the analogy, do SCI-Arc students want leaders more like Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus? MIDTERM: SoftTECH & SoftBODIES Steve Fuchs2004-11-24T16:23:51-05:00>2018-01-30T06:16:04-05:00

I'm hungry. Thanksgiving Feast in the Main Space today. OH BOY! Thanks Bill for the years of dedication :)

Funny thing is... my SoftTECH project looks like a Turkey. I've been exploring cosmetic surgery as it relates to architecture, specifically how the Folding Episode has a relationship with the current cultural aesthetic of "Tactical Beauty" (read: FX's Nip/Tuck, E!'s Doctor 90210, ABC's Extreme Makeover, and Fox's The Swan). Here's the initial basis for my exploration:

--------------------
ABSTRACTTACTICAL BEAUTY:
An Emergent Architectural Aesthetic from Cosmetic Surgery

Whatever your feelings are about body modification, Western culture is obsessed with the horrific and grotesque. Specifically, cosmetic surgery has become an answer to flaws in the idealized human aesthetic -- just as form continues to emerge as the dominant architectural aesthetic of our time. These two fields, cosmetic surgery and architecture, share a similar trajectory; they both seek a hands-on, tactical...

Programmatics, geotechnics, structure, mechanics, commerce and environment are among the many fields which enable architecture to operate and perform. These technologies react to create an `Architecture of Indeterminacy', which favors multiple and temporal approaches to design over planning and orchestration, and allows architecture to participate in and reorganize our constantly shifting culture. This studio looks at the contemporary architectural platform and operates as a laboratory for finding new possibilities of integrating a wide range of techniques and technologies. Conventions and standards in architecture are challenged through a rigorous examination of other models of design and production, such as fashion, art, film and industrial design, creating a nonlinear process that can respond to a number of parameters,...
